Start your weekend with a little culture during your lunch break today with a stop at the Arts Center of Mississippi (201 E. Pascagoula St.) for a peek at the WellsFest Art Show, and exhibits by Ginger Williams and Daniel MacGregor, all of which are free. After work, head to the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum for the 19th annual CelticFest, with gates opening at 7 p.m. Tonight, the ever-popular whiskey tasting is sold out, but the festival still has plenty to offer, with a dozen performances on three stages. Take time to honor victims of 9-11 Saturday at the National Day of Service starting at 7:45 a.m. at the corner of Medgar Evers Boulevard and W. Northside Drive. The Jackson Inner-City Gardeners will be clearing a plot to prepare for spring planting. If Saturday is your day for grocery shopping, consider one of the many farmers' markets in the area offering the freshest Mississippi-grown produce, handmade crafts and other goodies. At 3 p.m., head to the Ole Tavern on George Street (416 George Street) for the Jackson Revival and Tailgate Party, featuring Chef Tom Ramsey, eight bands including Electric Hamhock and Furrows and the Lazy Magnolia tailgating competition. $10 in advance; $15 on Saturday. If you musical tastes are a bit more refined, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. at Thalia Mara Hall. As a prelude to the Bravo I: Joy and Contemplation concert, head to the symphony dinner and lecture at the Mississippi Museum of Art at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is $25 and $40; concert tickets are $20 and up.
If you didn't get to CelticFest Friday or Saturday, you still have an opportunity Sunday for tons of fun from 10:30 a.m. until closing at 5:30 p.m. To avoid the crowds, plan for a leisurely mid-morning or after-church brunch at one of the area's fine restaurants.
