The water's back on and there's no freezing in the forecast. It's time to get out of the house and enjoy the weekend! Be sure to patronize the local Jackson restaurants and businesses that have taken a hit this past week dealing with the city's water issues. Tonight, release your inner demons at the Monster Freestyle Fallout truck show at the Mississippi Coliseum, roaring off at 8 p.m. Then go bang your head at Fire with the AC/DC tribute band Hells Bells. For something a bit mellower, head to Hal & Mal's for "The Year of the Song," with performances by Kevin Gordon, Shannon McNally, Paul Burch, The Levees, Monty Russell and Alan West Brockman. Saturday is a great time to grab the kids and head to the Martin Luther King Jr. parade, starting at Brinkley Middle School at 10 a.m. Later, head to Mississippi Museum of Art for "Jim Henson's Fantastic World." (The museum, normally closed Mondays, will be open this coming Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.) Then, head next door to the Arts Center of Mississippi for "The World Through Lou's Lens," where all proceeds will go to the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and the Music N' Motion program for underprivileged students. The weekend's music lineup has something for every musical taste, from the Mississippi Academy of Ancient Music's presentation of Parisian medieval duo Sequentia at St. James Episcopal Church, to the R&B sounds of Akami Graham at Schimmel's, the gypsy jazz of Swing de Paris at Underground 119 and so much more. Monday will feature several events in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. At 10 a.m. attend the wreath-laying ceremony at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Medgar Evers Boulevard (Freedom Corner). Jackson City Hall hosts a birthday bash at noon, and at 6:30 p.m. Jackson State University hosts a banquet at the Walter Payton Recreation and Wellness Center.
Take a stand in support of Mississippi historically black colleges and university and attend the HBCU rally starting at 11 a.m. Monday. Supporters will march from the state fairgrounds and move swiftly to the State Capitol by noon. Organizers are also asking for contributions to aid the people of Haiti; bring canned food, clothes (men, women, boys, girls, and infants) and other supplies such as bottled water, first aid kits, etc.
Tougaloo and Millsaps colleges will host a joint celebration Monday. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Tougaloo's Kroger Gymnasium hosts a prayer breakfast. From 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., students will be working on a Habitat for Humanity project. At 6:30 p.m., a vigil and candlelight ceremony will take place on the Woodworth Chapel lawn, followed by a service at 7 p.m. Call 601-977-7871 for more information.
