CONTACT the Crisis Line is starting volunteer training tomorrow.

CONTACT the Crisis Line, a volunteer interfaith telephone ministry in operation since 1971, is starting a training class for new volunteers tomorrow, Sept. 17, from 6:45 to 9:45 p.m. The 13-week training runs until mid-December, with a break for Thanksgiving.

Started by a group of mental health professionals and ministers who shared the conviction that no one should have to face life's challenges without a caring, objective listener, calls to CONTACT are anonymous and confidential. After training, volunteer crisis counselors are available by telephone to the public 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Crisis Line intervenes in suicide threats, domestic violence, rape, and other events dangerous to life and limb. CONTACT also provides outreach to elderly people who request a daily call.

If you are interested in volunteering or need additional information, go to the CONTACT the Crisis Line Web site or call the training coordinator at 601-982-9888. If you need help, call the crisis line at 601-713-HELP (4357), or (601) 366-9298 for Spanish speakers.

CONTACT has been around for a very long time and has done some great things toward saving the lives of many callers who threatened suicide. It also serves as a great referral system for people just not knowing where to go or who to call for their issues. I urge anyone who is interested in volunteering some of your precious time to do the training and become a helper for the many who are in need.
