The Mississippi State Department of Health reports that the number of confirmed H1N1 swine flu cases in the state hit 50 yesterday. The bulk of the cases remain on the coast, with 17 cases in Harrison County and 13 in Jackson County. Hinds County now reports two cases, as does Yazoo County to the north. Neighboring Madison and Rankin Counties report one confirmed case each.
Symptoms for swine flu are about the same as for other flu strains, and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Antiviral medications have proven effective in reducing the symptoms, but require a prescription. Cases in Mississippi have all been mild, and none have resulted in death, but the MSDH recommends you see your doctor if you believe you might have the flu.
The best way to protect yourself from contracting the flu is to follow general hygiene guidelines: Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use alcohol-based hand cleaners; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; avoid close contact with people who are ill; and use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, disposing of the tissue properly.
