Road to @#$%^&* Wellness

Well, it seems I'm on the road to wellness whether I like it or not. I've found a wonderful, wonderful integrative doctor, Dr. Joseph White (of the Optimum Health Institute up near Tougaloo), who has helped me figure out why I've been tired so much (you know, the reasons beyond working 80 hours a week for four years now!). I'll spare you details, but let's say my system is out of balance, and it's making me miserable as a result. And I'm not facing anything life-threatening (thank God), but could be if I don't get my healthy lifestyle back in place.

Fortunately, his advice is not new to me for the most part. I have to focus on diet, exercise and removing toxins from my body and my environment. Most importantly, I have to relax and cut back stress, which has risen dramatically this spring, especially since The Clarion-Ledger decided to try to shut down our distribution channels.

Fortunately, I live with a man who is supportive and health-minded himself (even when he doesn't do everything right, either). Todd and I have spend much of the last few weeks switching as completely as possible to organic and natural foods and products, going to the Y, walking and enjoying each other's company in a stress-free way. This means I'm out and about less, but I'm hoping you all will forgive me, understanding that we can't change the world if we're not in good health. We're in this for the long haul, and want to be in as good a shape as possible for the good fight.

I do highly recommend Dr. White. It was so wonderful to go to a real doctor who gave me a real physical — but then did not thrust a handful of prescriptions (or, worse, samples!) in my hand, or start talking about cutting on me in some way. Dr. White believes in a preventive health, as do I. And I can't tell you how happy I am to find such a doctor right here in Jackson.

BTW, I'm (re)reading this book right now—hedonistic health is my kind of wellness program. ;-)

Ladd, Hope you are feeling less out of sorts these days. I'm a recently recovered person myself, from writer's block, so forgive the barrage of comments this evening. As I said, I've recently returned to Mississippi and am very interested in your alternative weekly and the multifarious topics found there. I'm curious Ms. Ladd, what is it that you value above all things? Vague? yes, i want to see where you take this......

I know firsthand how stress can wreak havoc on the body, especially when it seems like there are so many people against you. Remember that your enemies are outnumbered by those who care. Don't let the naysayers get to you - they will reap what they sow without you having to do a thing. Donna, I wish you well, and I'm glad you found a doctor that you like. Take care of yourself - you're the only "you" that you have.
