[Alert] Support Public Education Today

Here's what you can do right now to demand full funding of Adequate Education. An alert just in from Parents for Public Schools; the Jackson Free Press stands with PPS on this issue. Please pick up the telephone now. Keep reading to see who to call.

PPS: The legislative conferees have been named. These are the legislators who will negotiate the House and Senate education bills and develop the final plan. Please contact them immediately and urge them to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, which allocates state money to every school district in the state.

House of Representatives:
Cecil Brown, Hinds County
Johnny Stringer, Jasper, Jones, Newton Counties
Wanda Jennings, DeSoto County

Senate:
Mike Chaney, Warren County
Jack Gordon, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Grenada, Lee counties
Terry Burton, Lauderdale, Newton, Scott Counties

We must not let up. Please call or visit your legislators over the next few days. The number at the Capitol is 601-359-3770. The conference report has to be issued in just a few days so the time for a vote is drawing near. In particular, send a message to the conferees.

Our message is – fully fund public education and the final installment of the teacher pay raise. And, if you support increasing revenues through cigarette taxes or other means, be sure you legislators know this.

Another urgent plea: Coalition representatives heard today that the word around the capitol is that senators are not hearing from their constituents regarding education funding; therefore (senators are saying), this must not be important to them (constituents). The Senate will be in session today (Thursday), tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday morning. Please keep that capitol switchboard ringing from now until Saturday noon. Urge your senator to fully fund the MAEP. Capitol operators will take your message to your senator on the floor of the Senate during the session. Why not set a goal for your district of having at least 20 phone calls made to your senator by Saturday noon? The number at the Capitol is 601-359-3770. Your phone call could make the difference between full funding for education and devastating cuts. Many thanks for your vigilance on behalf of our children. Gratefully- Nancy Loome The Coalition for Children & Public Education 601-925-9148 h 601-672-0953 c Seriously, y'all. Just pick up the phone and call the legislators. They need to hear your support of public education.
