New York Press has named Kirk Kelly, who flew in to perform at our voter rally last week, the "Best Working-Cass-Hero Folk Singer" in their Best of New York issue: From unskilled hospital workers, truck drivers, retail grunts and, yes, even working musicians, Kelly has been on the front lines fighting to get them a living wage. And he knows from what he speaks, having worked as a grape picker, dishwasher, construction laborer, bartender, janitor, farm worker, short-order cook and messenger. He's had some of the hardest and lowest-paid jobs in America. "My music is in opposition to that whole folk music establishment," he recently told us. "[It's] for the bleeding-fist liberals, as opposed to the bleeding-heart liberals." Kelly doesn't believe in "polite and clever remarks" when it comes to the fight for the working man. "It needs to be fought down and dirty in the street." Kelly's new CD, No Irish Need Apply, will be released soon, and he recently scored a song on a Bruce Springsteen tribute album. His version of "Down Bound Train" is actually superior to the original, perhaps due to Kelly's wealth of experience in riding down the rail of despairówhich is more than Bruce can boast. He plays regularly throughout the city. Hey, we knew this already. Cheers to Kirk for thir honor and for flying to Jackson for the night just to participate in our rally; he continued on his AntiFolk the Vote tour the next a.m., leaving for the airport at 6 a.m. Full piece
