Nader Wants to Be 'POTUS'; Barbour Sez Dems 'Nervous'

AP reports: "Nader's decision was greeted with a chorus of condemnation from Democrats, longtime friends and former supporters who blame him for Al Gore's loss four years ago. They suggested that Nader would not pull close to the 2.7 percent of the vote he won before without the backing of an established party and some of his past supporters."

"Republicans resisted the temptation to gloat as party chairman Ed Gillespie proclaimed that Bush would win a second term no matter who runs. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman, said, 'It will make less difference than the Democrats fear, but I know they're very nervous about it.'"

Good Lord. Nader again. I wish he would stick to what he does well, and stay out of politics. Does it strike anyone else as funny that our Barbour is telling the national media what national Democrats are feeling? Maybe I'm just punchy tonight, but that cracks me up.

(Like my New York Post headlines? Definitely punchy. )

Todd, you sure you don't want to donate to a Draft Buchanan campaign?

Salon has a rather scathing piece on Nader's decision to run, which is rather fun to read, if you're in the mood. "Nader's narcissism has metastasized to such proportions that he came forward to announce his candidacy without being able to brandish a single one of the celebrities who surrounded him in 2000 -- not Michael Moore, not Tim Robbins or Susan Sarandon, not Patti Smith. In fact, more important, he cannot offer the Green Party, whose nomination he disdains to seek -- so much for his claim that he is the principled champion of third parties and their indispensability in American history. To the struggle against "corporate-occupied territory," Nader offers only himself. La troisiËme partie, c'est moi. "
