Green Party of MS Says Stop Buying Public Offices

(Aug. 16, 2003, press release) The Green Party of Mississippi announces its support for a new project called "White House for Sale" which tracks the special-interest contributions to President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign and analyzes the record of favoritism, conflicts-of-interest and influence peddling related to those contributions. The project is sponsored by Public Citizen, a national, nonprofit public interest organization with 140,000 members, which focuses on returning the power of government to the voters and taxpayers.

This site will focus on Bush's fundraising because he is the only major candidate who has opted out of the public financing system during the primaries, aiming to collect at least $200 million during the primary season - nearly five times the amount a candidate who remains in the public financing system can raise and spend.

The Green Party of Mississippi fully supports Public Citizen's fervent efforts to "help the American Public wake up to the auction that's taking place benefiting the wealthiest Americans and greediest special interests, and demand that it be stopped."

The Green Party of Mississippi believes this is equally true at the state level and urges Mississippians to heed the call of Public Citizen and support the Green Party candidate for governor, Sherman Lee Dillon, whose platform is based on democracy, social justice, equal opportunity and environmental/economic sustainability. Dillon is concentrating heavily on campaign finance reform and is setting the example by taking contributions from
individuals of no more than $200 and refusing corporate contributions. Dillon
is urging other candidates to do the same, in the interest of taking the power of government from the wealthy and corporate interests and returning it to the people of Mississippi.
