JPD Reports Crime Increases

— Violent crime in Jackson is up 92 percent from the same week last year reported the Jackson Police Department in its weekly statistics. The biggest contributors to the increase were 16 armed robberies from Aug. 13 to Aug. 19, up from eight at this time last year.

JPD also recorded 28 aggravated assaults last week, a 75 percent jump from 16 during the same period last year. The department reports two homicides, down from three the previous week.

There was a slight increase in total property crime, from 187 last year and 169 the previous week to 194. Auto burglary, auto theft and business burglary were all up. The 16 business burglaries were more than double last year's number and more than triple the previous week. There were 87 auto burglaries, nearly double the 44 of the previous week.

Precinct 4 had the most auto burglaries with 31, and auto thefts with 10. Precinct 1 led in house burglaries with 22.

Total major crimes, which include violent and property crimes, were up 18.8 percent from the previous week and up 15 percent from last year.
