Jackson police officers reported 220 major crimes last week, an increase of 5.3 percent from the previous week, according to statistics released this morning by the Jackson Police Department. Officers reported 189 property crimes, up from 177 the week before, and 31 violent crimes, one fewer than the prior week. Property crimes increased in all categories except for grand larceny and house burglary, which dropped from 15 to 11 and from 90 to 74, respectively. For the year to date, major crimes are up 2.8 percent over 2009's numbers, with property crimes showing a 0.4 percent increase and violent crimes up 19 percent, from 1,339 to 1,593. Of the city's four patrol precincts, only Precinct 3 in northwest Jackson has seen a decrease in overall crime numbers for the year to date. House burglaries, the most frequently reported crime in the city, have risen 9.2 percent this year. Auto burglaries, the second-most frequently reported, have dropped 8.6 percent from 2009.
