Major crimes decreased again last week in Jackson, according to statistics released today at a Jackson Police Department meeting. The city's overall major crime rate was down 13 percent from the previous week, and 0.9 percent year over year.
Property crimes, which to date are 0.4 percent above last year's numbers, dropped 21 percent from the previous week, from 210 incidents to 166. Police reported a 22 percent drop in house burglaries and a 35 percent decrease in auto burglaries. This year, the two categories have been thorns in the department's side, with yearly totals for both roughly 5 percent above last year's figures.
Violent crimes increased 45 percent from the previous week, from 29 incidents to 42, but as a whole, the category is still down 9 percent over last year for the year to date. The city has seen 30 homicides this year, down from 47 at the same time last year.
Good. I hope this trend continues.
Perhaps the thugs are getting the message that grownups are in charge of City Hall and JPD again.
