TeamJXN, an organization dedicated to showcasing the growth of Jackson businesses, restaurants and entrepreneurial developments, is hosting the second of four planned meetings for 2016 on Thursday, April 21, at the Mississippi Museum of Art (380 S. Lamar St.). The meeting will focus on the latest developments in the construction of The District at Eastover, a mixed-use city center and combined commercial and residential space located between the Eastover and Fondren neighborhoods.

The meeting begins with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and an invocation from Tonya Ware of the Church Triumph Global. At 11:50 a.m., Todd Stauffer, publisher of the Jackson Free Press and vice chairman of the Team JXN board, will give a presentation spotlighting Jackson business owners Derrick Cannon of Trensek, Bobby Pamplin of SCORE and Mary Claire Primos of local arts and music festival Stray at Home.

The District at Eastover presentation begins at noon and will feature guest speakers Ted Duckworth of Duckworth Realty and McDaniel Wyatt of Humphreys & Partners Architects, two of the primary developers of the project. Duckworth and Wyatt will discuss hotel developments, restaurants planned to open and when the development will officially launch.

After the presentation on The District, Team JXN will give updates on some of its ongoing key initiatives, including an effort to renovate Smith Park in downtown Jackson and the construction of the Museum to Market Trail, a paved multi-use trail projected to be five miles long that connects three parks through the Belhaven, downtown and Belhaven Heights neighborhoods. Pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized vehicles will be able to use it.

The cost to attend the meeting is $20 for Team JXN members and $30 for non-members. For more information on Team JXN, visit teamjxn.com or call 601-910-6233.

Millsaps College Announces Institute for Civic and Professional Engagement

Millsaps College announced the creation of a new leadership development program called the Institute for Civic and Professional Engagement last week. Over the course of 2015, a task force composed of campus faculty, staff and students developed the institute, which is part of the college's strategic plan called "Across the Street and Around the Globe: Partnerships and Influence at Millsaps College."

The institute will facilitate student development through in-depth student research projects, study-abroad programs, co-curricular service projects and professional internships. Students will focus on topics such as career goals, civic commitments, and professional and leadership skills.

Kenneth Townsend, an assistant professor of political science at Millsaps, will serve as executive director of the institute. A native of Attala County, Townsend is a 2004 graduate of Millsaps with a master's degree in philosophy from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and a master' degree and Juris Doctor degree from Yale University.
