WMartin, I think the key is not to allow a few fools to have too much power or to speak for the entire city. In recent years, determined Jacksonians of all sorts have come together to do positive things, and push back against the negative media coverage and attacks from the suburbs. As a result, the city is getting stronger regardless of its poor leadership. And hopefully that's only a matter of time. So, join us on the ProJack bandwagon! It doesn't mean we never criticize, but that it's about being constructive, not destructive, and not falling for silly demagoguery. It's an important shift.

I agree with that, Baquan. The problem with the sensationalistic approach to crime, for instance, is that the media themselves don't do the homework about real solutions are, with editors like Ronnie Agnew spouting things like "crime is the No. 1 issue!" and journalists and columnists twisting very real warnings about what the perception that crime is out of control does to a community (making it harder to lesson crime). That is reporting crime just to get people hysterical and to pick up the paper. The irony, of course, is that after all these years of crime sensationalism, people are now rejecting the Ledger etc. due to pitiful, superficial reporting. Chickens do roost, eventually.

I love the t-shirt idea. I think the t-shirt should have PROJACK on the front and the dictionary definition on the back. I also wish we had a welcome wagon, a pack of information to welcome people who move to the area. Back home it was organizational, service, and festival information, but also a t-shirt, coupons for local restaurants, and a newspaper. Nice way to get orientated when you move to a new place.

I can tell you this, too: If more people in the 'burbs expressed that attitude, we city folk wouldn't be so defensive! The city has been so beaten down that we've had to fight to pick the old girl up. But it's working!

Lambda...it actually would. That theory only works for donuts. The surrounding communities could not survive an implosion of the capital city. Ironically there are folsk surrounding us that share your sentiment. it just defies logic. The great majority of those citizens work in Jackson. Their communities simply are not equipped to handle a workforce like we do. A good number of the cities you mention have people who work and draw paychecks HERE and spend that money shopping, eating, going to movies, and paying taxes THERE. We never see a dime of it. Jackson isnt going down. far from it. In fact, with current development going at this pace and the growing number of folks expressing a desire to push a positive Jackson, I believe we are going to expand

Regarding the 'burbs- how is it that some (most) of them can elect mayors that actually have a clue? I don't think Jackson has had a decent one since Dale Danks. It seems that every election cycle gets worse for the city. Jackson could use a Gene McGee.

3 reasons, Our daily newspaper not being able to "afford" to do real reporting. Balanced reporting 2. WJTV. Never show up to any press conferences or events that are positive. Never. Ever. They are consistently absent. 3. These blogs that propogate rumor, innuendo, and platforms to launch personal unsubstantiated attacks. Jackson has become a town that easily falls prey to perception. We have been so wounded that there came a time when the public would believe anything they read, saw on TV, or read on a blog. That is how we have gotten where we are. But now we have people really questioning candidates. Folks calling out shoddy reporting. Embarassing tv stations. Calling out internet thugs who never have real factual info to back up their sensationalism. Times are changing. I hear Gene McGee is a good guy. IMO his neighbor isn't. Just there to perpetuate a stepford lifestyle. It is what it is. We have to call folks out where they stand

Well, for one thing, they've got effective leadership (from what I've seen). The kids can play outside and not hear gunfire. I don't think demonizing people who prefer to live in Madison (or Brandon or wherever) is going to do anything to improve Jackson. If Jackson wants to improve it's image, it's got to start with it's citizens. And come to think about it, what exactly is so bad about choosing to live in Madison or Rankin County?

Rex. That's the point. Most Jacksonians on ALL sides of the city live and play without hearing gunfire. I grew up in North Jackson. Never heard gunfire. Lived off Prentiss In West Jackson. Never heard gunfire. Now live in Fondren. Never hear gunfire. It simply is not the common occurance that most suburbanites think it is. Most suburbanites have NEVER lived in Jackson. But believe they know what Jackson is like because they watch the news or read the CL which horribly skews the truth. Most Jacksonians have grown up not experiencing the wild west lifestyle that most folks outside of here feel we live. Try living here yourself and see. Many have had ONE bad experience and moved. Crime is a random occurance that can happen anywhere. Apparently folks in Madison feel they are shielded to it. Jackson is a capital city, a growing metropolis that will have big city problems. Do you think Birmingham, Dallas, Orlando, or Nashville don't have crime? Do you think that folks in the burbs of those cities say that you can't live in Birmingham without hearing gunshots lol. Its a laughable premise. Folks can live where they wish. But when you move because of propoganda then it hurts our states core. You find a cheaper house. Cool. Find a bigger house because of a growing family. Cool. Want a pool. Cool. But because the CL bloggers say that you'll get murdered if go downtown Jackson. Or WJTV leads with a murder or because someone broke into someones house you know ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN..then no that works against all of us

I do believe the suburbs would suffer if Jackson suffered. Where do we go to take our kids out? Jackson. The Zoo, the Science Museum, the Planetarium, the upcoming Children's Museum, the many historical sites that Jackson has to offer - we can't find those in my town. Jackson is a historical and cultural cornucopia. Where do we go for dinner? Once again, Jackson. Heck, even the chains have better food in Jackson than elsewhere. And you can't find a Sal and Mookie's, Walker's Drive-in, or anything like that. I feel perfectly safe walking down any Jackson street. I have never had a problem when I've been in Jackson alone. I have never felt any danger at Metrocenter or anywhere in the 80/18 corridor. People may move out to the suburbs, but where do most of them work? Once again, Jackson. All the state government jobs are located there. I've seen the traffic flow going back and forth: in the mornings, there is 2 to 3 times more traffic going towards Jackson than out. Reverse that in the evening. That says something right there. We need Jackson to stay strong, stay healthy, and grow.

You're right. It's not just the issue of where you go out, Lady. Bedroom communities, by their definition and existence, rely on the city where many of them work for their survival. Building an upscale shopping mall and some office buildings does not detract from the fact that the suburbs rely on the health-care industry and government-related jobs in Jackson for much of its livelihood.

And as far as suburban mayors go: ask some Clintonians what they think of Rosemary Aultman. We have some really stupid Gestapo laws over here: like the garbage cans have to be in within 24 hours of the garbage running: the garage door can only be open so long: heck, they'll happily cite you if you don't cut the grass when they think it should be cut. And Clinton Public Schools sending policemen out to your home to verify you live there if, by one reason or another, you enroll your children under an affidavit? CPS has a place on their website where you can report out of district students. The school system may be good, but that's carrying things way too far, IMHO. The burbs aren't perfect. Nowhere near perfect. No place is.

Interestingly, I walked at Parham Bridges Sunday afternoon and as I made my way through so many vehicles to get a parking place--the sun out and so many folks enjoying the tennis courts and the walking trail--I chuckled at how many of the tags were Madison County tags. I want a tee shirt. Tell me where to buy it and how much folding green to bring.

Kaze- I grew up in N Jxn, off Hanging Moss, from 63-88. My ex wife and I lived in the Colonial Heights area until '01. At that time I moved to Ridgeland and I have to say that it's where I call home now. I don't favor draconian ordinances like the ones in Clinton mentioned above, but that goes back to the "broken window" concept. I hope that Jackson can be all that it has the potential to be, it's where I was born. My initial comments were meant to suggest that maybe Jackson could look to some of the things a few of the 'burbs were doing right to better itself. And IMHO, Ridgeland is the best of the lot.

I agree Rex. Jackson has traditionally not given folks the feeling that it was "open for business" That feeling was furthered once this administration took over and the light was further shined on the lazy, incompetent, or rude (take your pick), folks that work in those offices. There is no accountability and folks are there just to get checks. So I will agree with you there. Governmental structure and just plain old leadership play a part. I also agree with You baquan re: holding businesses to a standard. But I don't agree with stepford type tactics that force businesses to do things a certain way. Business owners should be able to do what they wish. Homeowners should be able to do what they wish. Hell, they pay notes on their property. Outside of heavy loitering, excessive trash, and keeping a yard cut, I shouldn't hear from you. If I have a car that isn't working and prefer to change the oil or the brakes myself, I should be able to do it WHEN I want to do it. If I own my home, I should be able to rent to who the hell I want to. I PAID FOR IT! That burns me up. Clearly speaks to an elitist,"we don't want a certain kind of person" mentality

Rico, nothing is wrong with being "pro" anything. And no one is suggesting to be "anti" anything. There won't be any I hate Madison campaigns. We've got better things to do. However do you deny that there has been a systematic constant subtle "we're better than Jackson" undertone to what the Madison mayor has been doing? Being in direct competition with Jackson for new business. Actively campaigning to woo Jackson business to Madison. If I wanted to go for the jugular and really be outright inflammatory I could say the mayor institutes covenants and ordinances that are designed to keep as many Black people out of Madison as they can. No apartments within the city limits, homeowners can't rent their homes out in certain areas, no cars in the yards etc. Those ridiculous brick gas stations lol. Makes me wonder if there will soon be a no-bbq, no spades playing or a 2.5 children per household ordinance passed soon. And of course I'm overexaggerating but cmon. Where does it stop. How long will Jackson continue to take the bashing before we fight back. You say we shouldn't be "anti" how about you go to some of your neighbors who bash Jackson and ask them why THEY are "anti". Jackson is simply now fed up and starting to react. A lot of it is aimed at US because we have a lot of work to do. Like first find out how everyone in a position to DO something is scared of our mayor. Then I'd like to know why everyone there is scared of your mayor. Because the atmosphere is being created that makes it look as if Madison wants to be an island. Mark my words the tide will quickly turn later this year when K.E. And Farish come online to compliment the Convention Center.

Kamikaze, one only needs to read this thread to see a *lot* of 'burb bashing. Jackson people are every bit as guilty of looking down on the outlying areas as the suburbanites are about looking down on Jackson. We've beaten that horse enough, haven't we? I'm just thinking that maybe you guys should lead by example and prove that you are better than that. Leave the bashing out and just be positive- Jackson does have a lot to offer, and I agree that it will soon have much more to offer. As an aside to this, do you guys realize that every time we in the suburbs see the "buy local" stuff on here and elsewhere, we get the message- and "buying local" for us means buying in Ridgeland or Madison or Brandon or Pearl or Byram, or Clinton... Why not a "Buy Jackson" campaign instead?

That fits me as well. Every since I moved into the city limits of Jackson right after Christmas, I've done very little business outside the city. I was at the new DSW store out at Dogwood the other day and while they did have good shoes at reasonable prices, me buying shoes there does nothing to fix Jackson streets, pay Jackson police officers, fix Jackson water pipes, etc. It helps Flowood function as a city, but not Jackson. If I want to see a movie or go to a Braves game, I have no choice but to go outside the city, but most everything else in Jackson when all possible. BTW, Rico, I have seen "Buy Jackson" billboards and there is an organization or two that encourages people to do so. Also, I don't wanna engage in bashing the suburbs, but whenever people bash my city, I'm going to defend her.

We may have moved to Clinton, but we still love Jackson. Jackson is Ironghost's hometown, he was born there, raised there, graduated from high school there. I moved there when I came from Kentucky: we married there, and both our children were born there. Jackson has a special place in our hearts. We sure don't want to see anything bad or negative said about the city. And I was not intentionally bashing Clinton. I'm saying every city has their good and bad points. Clinton, while having a small-town feel and great schools, does not have the educational opportunities Jackson does. However, just surviving fianancially is much easier in Jackson, and the crazy rules I mentioned above aren't there.

I'm on with the PROJACK idea and tees. I've lived in Jackson 20 years, love it, don't want to live anywhere else. I do have to agree with anyone anywhere in the Metro area that we are all in this together and all need each other to thrive: the Madison cars at Parham Bridges, etc. I trained for a half marathon out on Highland Colony Parkway and along the walking trail in Ridgeland. But I too believe that living together requires we find a balance, between the rights of home and business ownership and the responsibilities of building a thriving community. I am a street captain in our neighborhood association. It is important to me that people not be allowed to park broken down cars in a yard and leave their property in disrepair and junk in their yards and let their animals run loose. All of that lowers my quality of life. As long as God gives me breath I will address this regardless of where I live. With ownership of homes or businesses in Jackson or Madison or Ridgeland or Clinton or Terry comes responsibility for the good of us all, all our property values. I do not want a Mayor telling me what kind of siding to put on my Service Station. On the other hand, I do not want a Mayor telling me that anything goes. Somewhere between the two lies high quality of life for us all. Which, I think, is what we all want.

Lady Havoc, I get ya'! I lean toward Both/And thinking. Either/or doesn't get it for me. We are all connected in ways various and mysterious. The stronger I get, as a city or a person, the stronger everything around me can be. And, vice versa. Which underlines the importance of those [like Kaze and the Progressives and JFP and so many unnamed others] when they empower us as Jacksonians to love and accept who we are and are becoming. The marvelous book Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore, Chapter 3 "Self-love and Its Myth: Narcissus and Narcissism"--sounds deep and it is--overlays onto entities, as well as people, his concept of narcissism: "a condition in which a person [or entity] does NOT love himself [or itself, and] this failure in love comes through as its opposite because the person tries so hard to find self-acceptance." Moore says, too, that ". . .Putting oneself down is narcessism in reverse" He says that narcissism applies to buildings, a piece of art, a city's design, a highway, a movie, a law--all these can have a tinge or even a grand streak of narcissism in them.. . . go[ing] overboard flaunting itself when its essential form is sufficient and lovable in itself. . . It is as if they feel inferior in the community of [the] other . . .and so they have to exaggerate themselves to be noticed. The Empire State Building loses no stature because buildings near it are taller and newer. It seems secure in its self-love. . ." If any of the Jackson Metro area cities are narcissistic, what is the cure, relating back to Moore: "We might say that the cure for narcissism is . . .love of one's deep soul. Or, to put it another way, narcissism breaking up invites us to expand the boundaries of who we think we are." "The secret to healing narcissism," Moore says, "is not to heal it at all, but to listen to it. Narcissism is a signal that the soul is not being loved sufficiently." I'm asking myself how I can best, as a Jacksonian, love the essence of what Jackson is and doesn't even yet know that it is and will discover it is as it learns to love itself. And, I'm stone cold sober.

Oh, dear, Lady Havoc! :) By the way, I use of the word "love" in my next to the last paragraph loosely defined as "extending oneself in work or service for the betterment of one's self or another." A bit of a take off on Scott Peck's definition of love.

Interestingly, I walked at Parham Bridges Sunday afternoon and as I made my way through so many vehicles to get a parking place--the sun out and so many folks enjoying the tennis courts and the walking trail--I chuckled at how many of the tags were Madison County tags. I was there about two weeks ago and it was definitely full. To the point I had to park in the lot that faces Jackson Academy. And that's a good thing--1, because of health benefits and 2, it shows the world that Jackson isn't the city on lockdown because of crime like its naysayers like to say we are.

Thanks Chip. Im sure more will pop up..Its time we seize the moment and declare that we ARE a great city! despite our flaws (which ALL cities have) we have plenty to take pride in. A strong attitude oozes over in ohter areas. People need to feel that spirit when they enter the city limits

Bubba, on the back of the tee, I think there should be a hyphen between pro and Jackson, and you should spell out the word "and" instead of using an ampersand. Also, how do you think it would look if you put Projack! in bold and justified the text.

Gottcha, Kaze, Can't wait to see how the shirt turns out. Don't know who is doing the art work, but Susan Cox Davis, artist, [a piece of hers was used for the AIDS Benefit this year] does great abstract city scapes. One of her city scapes is hanging in the large 8th floor conference room of Watkins Ludlam Winter Stennis in the marvelous new building downtown by One Jackson Place--the building with the 3 MS writers statuary outside.

Donna, my Zazzle store may be online, but I am still a Jacksonian and would like to help. All the designs are created by me. The only difference is that the T-shirts would be printed and shipped by Zazzle. I get the commission, which I will gladly spend in my hometown. It's not much different from having a local printing company do it because the T-shirts themselves are not manufactured in Jackson. Even if they bought the shirts in Jackson, the textile company that put the shirts together is not in Jackson. As you can tell, I would really like to help. :) However, if Kaze prefers an in-house company, I have no problem with that and am still willing to give input.

Guys, please don't laugh--I just realized the words: "hold your city down." In the terminology I use, that is a bad thing. It means to hold something back, deter it, keep it from progressing. Is it a today's term that now means the opposite?

Okay, now that I'm done having my pity party, I see that you guys are absolutely right. You need a brick-and-mortar place with a Jackson address to prove how PROJACK you are to those who may look for something to scoff at, and let's not give them any ammunition. My dreams are not dead, though. One day, I'll have my own, and you'll be looking for me. :) J.T., "holdin' it down" is interpreted by some as keeping things together or making a conscious effort to protect, e.g. holding down the fort, if you've ever heard that saying. However, "hold your city down" may need to be modified for the average reader.

L.W., it's important to remember that "shopping locally" in every way possible is vital to our city's health (not to mention our entrepreneurs). And shopping online is one of the *worst* things we Jacksonians can do (unless we are buying from local vendors online). Just as we should all go to national chains as a last possible resort (and even then, make sure they are in Jackson, whenever possible), we should vow to avoid online shopping unless it's the only way we can get something. I can't tell you how many times I've looked up a new book on Amazon and then bought it at Lemuria. If they don't have it at Lemuria, then to Books-A-Million in the city limits (where I also buy magazines if locals like McDades or Beemons don't have the ones I want). I consider it my "Shop Local" heirarchy. ;-) And, yes, Barnes & Noble fell out of it in any form when it abandoned Jackson. I did use a gift certificate there recently, but that's it. In your case, we should find you help to use your talents and passion in a locally owned business that will both benefit you and the community. Anyone who has ideas for L.W., please reach out to her. Otherwise, it sounds like you should have a contest for a design, Kaze. We could cough up the prizes probably if you'd like. ;-)

Fewer than used to, what with all the corporate lay-offs of late. Many, many people both in Jackson and its bedroom communities work for the city or state government, and many in health care, of course.
