The funk uprising of Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band comes to Martin's Thursday, Feb. 5, at 10 p.m.

If you attended the JFP's 2009 Best Of Jackson Party, you may be jonesing for the next opportunity to explore the shops in Duling School. This Thursday, Feb. 5, the shops stay open late for Fondren After 5 and are ready to greet you with music and refreshments. This will be the last Fondren After 5 for the Fondren Beverage Emporium, which will soon close its doors. Bid the FBE farewell and stock up on the exotic colas and candies while you still can. The Bachelorettes will perform beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the FBE.

If you're looking for a free show or adult beverage after your Fondren exploration, head to Fenian's for Thursday Irish Nights with Spirits of the House from 8-11 p.m. Or, head downtown to Martin's for the funk-rock stylings of Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band at 10 p.m. Aside from the roaring good music, another incentive to see the show at Martin's is you get to tell your Friday water-cooler co-workers, "Your mama's big fat booty was on-time last night!" It's the perfect way to bond with your fellow workers.

For teen rockers who have been dying to check out some big rock shows, this Friday is a rare opportunity for you to attend an all-ages quadruple bill at Fire. The Grammy-nominated metal group As I Lay Dying will be joined by MyChildren MyBride, Protest The Hero and The Human Abstract starting at 7 p.m. sharp, $18. It's a great opportunity to support live music for teens in the area.

If you haven't checked out Ole Tavern on George Street (aka. the old George Street) yet, they are booking some local favorites and bands that have not typically played Jackson before. Keep an eye out on our music calendar for the latest.

Next weekend is a big weekend to go out. You get a Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day back-to-back. Perhaps not the traditional "wine and cheese pairing" but good times none the less. After you see the new "Friday the 13th" film, check out indie rockers Roosevelt Noise at Martin's
Feb. 13, 10 p.m. They are one of the hottest up-and-coming rock bands in Jackson. Listen to their music at http://www.myspace.com/rooseveltnoise.

Next Saturday, there is a variety of choices for celebrating Valentine's Day with your sweetheart. The Mississippi Opera offers a romantic concert, "Love in the Afternoon," at the Belhaven Center for the Arts on Riverside Drive at 4:30 p.m. The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will perform "Passion at the Pops" at Thalia Mara that evening at 7:30 p.m., and the Annual HeARTS Against AIDS Benefit gets underway at Hal & Mal's at 6 p.m. Rock 93.9 is helping host Seether and Lillian Axe at Fire next Saturday at 9 p.m., $25. For a romantic dinner, get a table overlooking the lake at AJ's Seafood off Highland Colony and hear the Latin Jazz duo Los Papis, Cucho of Latinismo's side project, and it's well worth bringing your lady for dinner, 8-11 p.m.

Not to be missed is the rare opportunity to see the African Children's Choir concert at Thalia Mara Hall, 3 p.m. next Sunday, Feb. 15. Tickets are $15-$35 at 601-355-5252. You will not be disappointed. Also next Sunday, the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra will give a free concert at St. Andrew's Cathedral downtown at 3 p.m.

Be sure to add June 6 to your trip planner for indie-electro-rockers Animal Collective at The Library in Oxford. Their new record, "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is their most accessible to date.
