Welcome to the Music Section

By brianarobinson

Hey y’all, welcome to the new JFP music section. Poke around, and you’ll see plenty of new features.

We now have a page that lists local bands. As we continue updating it, it will have info about the artists’ influences, members, history, etc. Email me at [email protected] if you would like your musical act’s information on the website. I can also upload your songs for readers to download, listen to or make playlists from.

What’s also exciting is this new music blog! It’s just one of many cool music features that come with the new website. We’ll update it regularly with news and thoughts on music. The blog is not just a staff thing, though. If you’re interested in music blogging, you can either start blogging on your own (because every JFP-site user can blog on our site), and we’ll pick up on it and add you to the music, or email me (at [email protected]).

Have fun with the new site!

Round One of True South Classic Postponed Due to Weather

By bryanflynn

If you ever want to break a drought in Mississippi, just hold a PGA golf tournament. No matter the location, time of year or name of the tournament. Rain seems to find its way into the storyline.

This year is no exception with rain interrupting play in the opening round of the True South Classic. The majority of the field was unable to finish their first round.

The leader in clubhouse was Jason Bohn who finished his opening round with 64 at 8-under. He was followed by Luke Guthrie who shot a 65 in the first round to come in at 7-under.

Defending champion was at 4-under through seven holes before weather halted play. Brandon native Jonathan Randolph was able to finish his open round carding a 67 for 5-under tied eighth.

The tournament will restart at 8:30a.m. Friday morning with players finishing their opening round. Tickets from Thursday’s tournament play will be honored on Friday.

According to weather.com there is a 40% chance of rain for Friday. Rain stays in the forecast through the weekend with a 30% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday.

Black and Brown Vote Suppression in Scott County?

By R.L. Nave

Bill Chandler, the director of the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance, is reporting that the Scott County Circuit Clerk's office may have mishandled the voter registration forms of approximately 200 people, mostly Latinos and African Americans.

Chandler said MIRA, a which advocates from immigrants in Mississippi, registered 320 new voters in Scott County, where 9.7 percent of the population is Hispanic. More than 38 percent of Scott County's citizens are African American.

Roughly half the individuals MIRA signed up did not have working telephone numbers, Chandler said. Of the people who did have working phones, Chandler said not one received voter information cards from Circuit Clerk Joe Rigby's office. Chandler believes the voters without phones also likely did not receive the information cards.

"The effect of that is preventing people from knowing where their polling place is. To me, that is very, very serious," Chandler told the Jackson Free Press this evening.

Back-to-back calls placed to Rigby's office resulted in a busy signal.

CORRECTION: The above blog post has been edited to reflect that the circuit clerk's name is Joe Rigby. We apologize for originally misstating his name.

JRA Cuts Ties to Farish Street Group

By Tyler Cleveland

Well, that seemed easier than expected.

The Jackson Redevelopment Authority on Sept. 25 canceled, by unanimous vote, the contract of Farish Street Group LLC, the real-estate management company charged with luring businesses to the building on Farish Street.

In a move that Mayor Chokwe Lumumba called "long overdue," JRA chose to break ties with the group and its primary investor, developer David Watkins.

"Unfortunately, it just didn't work out and it was time for a change," Lumumba said. "Hopefully, some of the people who were involved with the previous group will be able to remain involved, but I just don't think they will be able to do what was originally planned. Either way, it didn't make sense for the city to be held hostage by one long-term contract."

Farish Street Group LLC hoped to have B.B. King's Blues Club open on the street by the end of 2012. Once architects finalized designs for the club, though, engineers discovered that not only could the current structure not support the capacity load, it doesn't even have a foundation.

Lumumba had called for the group to be kicked to the curb since December 2012.

City-wide Precautionary Boil Water Notice in Effect

By Tyler Cleveland

The Jackson Free Press received this notice from the city this morning:

Due to the recent loss in water pressure, the City of Jackson Water/Sewer Utilities Division has issued a precautionary boil water advisory until further notice for all customers on the City of Jackson Surface Water System. This notice does not affect customers served by Jackson’s Well Water System.

Due to a driver hitting a fire hydrant last night, a loss of pressure has occurred in the distribution system resulting in this precautionary boil water notice. The system should recover as repairs are completed.

City crews are currently performing repair work. Water pressure should be restored by the end of the day.

This is a precautionary advisory. This notice does not mean that the water is unsafe, but it does mean that customers must take precaution and boil the water before use. All customers are advised to boil their drinking water until adequate pressure is restored to the system. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute for the following: cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks feeding pets, washing dishes and all other consumption.

Residents will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted. For more information, call 601-960-2723.

For Sale: 142,000-square-foot Church, Used

By Tyler Cleveland

A recent listing on online classified ads web page Craigslist shows that the old Broadmoor Baptist Church on East Northside Drive is for sale for $2.8 million. The building most recently went under the title of Wesley Biblical Seminary.

I'm not sure who is looking to buy a church and is surfing Craigslist with a budget near $3 million, but the listing is complete with pictures of the property, which is in surprisingly good condition.

The building features seating for 750 in the updated sanctuary, "dozens of offices, tons of rooms (over 100), (a) 250-seat chapel, (a) 120-capacity lecture hall, choir rehearsal room, heated baptistry, commercial kitchen and large fellowship hall... ."

It also contains conference rooms, a board room, an organ, video surveillance capability, an elevator, parking for 500 of your closest friends.

But forget all that. Here's the kicker – the building includes a gym and a four-lane bowling alley and an apartment. With all the talk about charter schools** in the city, this could be primed to be a location for one.

Can anyone else think of a way this building could be used (other than the obvious - a church)?

** Please do not consider this an endorsement of charter schools.

Robocall Discourages Margaret Barrett-Simon From Running

By Todd Stauffer

A resident in Fondren sent us this voicemail message, which is an apparent robocall trying to suggest that Margaret Barrett-Simon's campaign is designed to help Tony Yarber.

Link: Robocall Audio

Barrett-Simon responded to the call on her Facebook page last week: "I want to be clear that, should I decide to enter the Jackson mayoral race, my campaign will not engage in these or similar tactics. I would also like to call all of those who decide to enter the campaign to renounce the use of 'robocalls' and similar anonymous 'hit and run' methods."

As one might expect, the call doesn't identify the party paying for it; it does appear to originate from a Washington State area code. When we called the Caller ID number in the message, we reached an automated attendant willing to put us on a no-call list.

If you receive robocalls that you can record or that reach voicemail, please email them to reporter R.L. Nave (rlnave at jacksonfreepress dot com).
