State tax collections are $1.8 million below expectations for May, Gov. Haley Barbour said in a statement yesterday.

"While this is a small shortfall, it is consistent with a slowdown in economic growth that is being seen around the country," Barbour said. "As economic growth has begun to lag, we are blessed that year-to-date revenue is about $38 million above the revised estimate."

Gaming taxes fell 22.51 percent below estimates; corporate taxes however were 34.87 percent above estimates, and oil severance taxes are up by 71.26 percent. State sales tax is 3.25 percent above estimates.
