On March 12, Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba announced the creation of a COVID-19 task force on to monitor the progress of the pandemic in the capital city. By March 16, the mayor declared a state of civil emergency and signed executive orders to prohibit the number of people in a gathering, shutter non-essential City buildings and require non-essential City employees to work off-site.
