MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) — Meridian public schools are moving to online learning Wednesday after an increase in cases of COVID-19 in Lauderdale County and in the school system, according to superintendent Amy Carter.
The Meridian Star reports that Carter said the decision was reached after consultation with state health officials.
Before the decision, students were being taught through a combination of traditional and virtual classes.
Students will follow their usual schedule of classes, and attendance will be taken daily when students log into Zoom sessions.
“Please know that this was not a decision that we made lightly. However, after conferring with the MSDH (Mississippi State Department of Health), it is necessary to shift to virtual instruction before the holiday break to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Carter said in a letter to parents.
