Election Set for Mississippi House Seat Vacated by Campbell

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Gov. Phil Bryant has set special election to a vacant seat in the Mississippi House.

Democratic Rep. Kimberly Campbell of Jackson stepped down at the end of May to become state director of AARP. She had been in the House since 2008.

District 72 covers parts of Hinds and Madison counties, including parts of north Jackson, Ridgeland and Pocahontas.

Bryant's office said Friday that candidates' qualifying deadline is July 25 and the election is Aug. 23.

If a runoff is needed, it will be Sept. 13.

Candidates in special elections run without party labels, but they often tell voters their party affiliation.

The winner will fill more than three years of a four-year term.
