Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. is asking the owner of an adult nightclub to take down a series of "illicit" billboard advertisements after complaints from residents.
Danny's Downtown signs, located along Interstate 55 and 220, feature a bikini-clad blonde with the slogan "strippers love to climb our pole."
In an Oct. 19 letter Johnson sent to owner Bo Powell, Johnson states that the city has "great concern," over the billboards.
"While we appreciate your business' desire to aggressively advertise, there has been an immense amount of public outcry within the last couple of days regarding the explicit nature of the billboards," the letter states.
WJTV reported that the city only regulates location, not the content of the billboards.

Danny's can take down the billboards knowing that they accomoplished precisely what they set out to. they couldn't have paid for the amount of "free" advertising that they've rec'd. all they'll do is just replace the billboards with a tamer version.

I was wondering what the all the outcry was about anyway, because they have had billboards up before and no one has ever said anything? There are billboards in north Mississippi regarding strip clubs up that way But I have to agree with eyerah

Meh. I was going to go all libertarian here, but I need to see the ads before commenting. Plus, I may have to visit Danny's to get their side of the story.

Little Jackson is having Big City growing pains again. I find it amusing that WAPT's unscientific poll showed 50% aren't bothered by the fact that the signs exist. It seems the wording is the major problem not the picture. Has no one in Jackson driven through a large, urban area? Wow, those signs are tame. But, in defense of self-righteousness, I'll say people have a right to complain and it seems that the mayor has responded to the squeaky wheel.
