On March 14th, DFA/Capitol Records will release LCD Soundsystem's Introns, a digital album of b-sides from U.K. vinyl singles, remixes and other rare gems previously unavailable in the U.S. The collection will be available strictly as a download, available through iTunes and other digital retailers.
Introns is a testament to the group's dance-driven, shape-shifting prowess: from the melodious mantra of "Yr City's A Sucker" to the massive Soulwax Shibuya version of "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" to their deft reworking of Siouxsie and the Banshees' classic "Slowdive," to name but three.
Introns follows LCD Soundsystem's 2005 self-titled, two-disc debut, a genre-defining dance-rock party album spiked with a sarcasm that spared no one, most especially its own founder, James Murphy, one half of the renowned New York production duo/record label DFA. Nominated for two Grammy awards – "Best Electronic/Dance Album" and "Best Dance Recording" (for "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House," the first U.S. single) – LCD Soundsystem suggested that being smart and being a dancing fool aren't mutually exclusive. The new material, contained on disc one, combined Murphy's trademark hook-laden, punk/funk/house workouts with some unexpectedly melodic turns while the second disc featured the early LCD Soundsystem vinyl singles – landmark dance/punk anthems such as "Losing My Edge," "Beat Connection" and "Yeah."
Upon the album's release last winter, Murphy took LCD Soundsystem on the road, aided and abetted by similarly funk/punk/art-rock obsessed friends Pat Mahoney (drums), Nancy Whang (keyboards, vocals), Tyler Pope (bass), and Phil Mossman (guitar, percussion, keys, bass - ex-Sabres Of Paradise). The quintet completed two sold-out tours of the U.K. and toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. They performed on "The Late Show With David Letterman," headlined an NME Brit Awards show and played Spin magazine's 20th anniversary party. More recently, Murphy served as a headlining DJ at Australia's Big Day Out festival. He'll be going into the studio in March to begin work on the next LCD Soundsystem album.
