Matador Records News

Interpol: Currently in the midst of playing radio festivals across the US, Interpol have recorded a new song, "Direction" for inclusion on compilation CD 'Six Feet Under: Everything Ends, Music From The HBO Original Series, Vol. 2', coming out June 21 on Astralwerks.

Writes Daniel Kessler, "We wrote this song specifically for the show and the soundtrack. We're all fans of Six Feet Under so we wanted to contribute something that
wasn't just a new single, but a song that would work as an intrinsic part
of the show. We wrote it during soundchecks on our last European tour
and recorded & mixed it the day after returning from Europe. We're
very happy with how it turned out and excited for people to hear it."

Later this month, Interpol are supporting the Pixies at Jones Beach
(June 14) and are then off to the UK for stadium-style gigs supporting U2
and Coldplay (please check the tour dates section).

The New Pornographers -

Is 'Twin Cinema' (August 23) the most eagerly awaited album of 2005?
How do we even try to quantify such a thing? Either we're telling the
truth or we're lying on your behalf.

Cat Power -

Aside from a one-off date at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on June 22,
the big news is that Chan Marshall has been recording her next album in
Memphis. Teamed with producer Stuart Sikes (who previously worked on
Cat Power's 'What Would The Community Think'), the early reports from
Tennessee have been intriguing to say the least. And that's all we're
gonna say, until we've got more to say.

The Double -

If you know what's good for you, now would be a good time to have a
gander at the tour dates section, where we find The Double immersed in a
series of US dates supporting the Mountain Goats, Go-Betweens and Comets
On Fire throughout the next two months, in advance of the September
release of 'Loose In The Air.'

Belle & Sebastian

to commemorate the release of the 'Push Barman To Open Door'
compilation set, our friends at Jeepster have created a rather gory video game:

For mature audiences only!

Brightblack:

Nabob writes,

"Andy Macleod (ex-WHITE MAGIC) rejoined with BRIGHTBLACK this month and
made a short film of NABOB & RAYBOB within a coastal Miwok teepee
playing a hand game. The Miwok were a gentle group of Northern California
indians. The llittle brown furry people called Ewoks (who were also
gentle) are named after the Miwoks. Andy also wove beats with us on a drum
kit in a gas station while here...

"The gas station is owned by Phillip K. Dick who wrote science fiction.

"Last weekend we played a show in BIG SUR and folks came out to listen
and make campfires by the BIG SUR river. Our friend Dana Kline joined
us for an 8 minute flute song. Dana hitchhiked from San Francisco to
come to the show and her flute really made the walls turn orange."

Stephen Malkmus

I sincerely hope we're all past that Paste ad deparment controversy.
Some people have suggested that this was merely a publicity stunt on
Matador's part, and to the extent that free expression and trying to get
people to check out SM's brilliant new album could be characterized as a
"stunt", well, we're guilty as charged. If loving SM's spellbinding
guitar playing is wrong, we don't wanna be right. You can check out
Stephen & the Jicks at the peak of the powers, playing at the following
locations:

June 6-Cambridge, MA @ Paradise
June 7- New York City, NY @ Irving Plaza
June 9 - Cleveland, OH @ Beachland Ballroom
June 10- Detroit, MI @ St. Andrew's Hall
June 11-Chicago, IL @ Metro
June 12- Minneapolis, MN @ First Avenue
June 14- Los Angeles, CA @ El Rey Theater
June 15- San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore
June 17- Portland, OR @ Crystal Ballroom
June 19-Vancouver, CAN @ Richard's on Richards
July 4- New York City (Battery Park) @ The Lawn
(supporting YLT)

Yo La Tengo

If there's a better career-spanning collection than 'Prisoners Of Love:
A Smattering Of Scintillating Senescent Songs 1985-2003", it probably
doesn't include any Yo La Tengo songs. Whether you're in downtown NYC
or lovely Leicester, this summer brings numerous opportunities to stand
in a very crowded space with other people trying to see and hear Yo La
Tengo.

June 11 - Festival Internacional Sonorama, Guadalajara, Mexico

Jicks, Laura Cantrell. Free admission)

Mission Of Burma - help wanted!

"Mission of Burma is looking for someone to develop and maintain their
website. The ideal candidate must not only display complete fluency in
the skills required to maintain a site with streaming audio and video,
but prove to be someone who is creative, ambitious and dedicated enough
to keep the MOB site active and engaging. The ability to make frequent
updates to pre-existing material is key, but the desire to consistently
develop and execute new methods of taking Burma further on the web is a
must.

"What we want are your ideas on how to create and maintain a
web-presence for Mission of Burma that reflects the avant-garde nature of the
band, but remains just as accessible to the legions of new fans as it does
the long-time stalwarts. Please submit your ideas to
[e-mail missing] . The candidates with the most creative ideas
alongside actual experience in the field will be interviewed. There
will be some compensation but not enough to be the reason to do this.

"Mission of Burma will be announcing a few US shows, shortly. Please
stay tuned for more details.

"Also, don't forget to become friends with Mission of Burma on My
Space."

Mogwai

"Mogwai are happy to announce that we are playing three shows in June.
One in Glasgow, one in Russia and one in Turkey. In the midst of this
frantic yet sporadic concerting we are also recording our new album in
our shiny new studio "Castle Of Doom". We have also been watching Star
Wars, Dave Chapelle and Dodgeball and listening to Colleen and Nine Inch
Nails. For more details on our activities check out our website
www.mogwai.co.uk."

Spoon -

Currently thriling sold out crowds throughout the US as they tour in
support of 'Gimmie Fiction', the album's first video, a clip for "I Turn
My Camera On" should be available here very soon. Recently confirmed
as headliners of July 16's Siren Festival at Coney Island, Spoon are
planning their return to Europe for next September.

Half-Cocked
Ocularis at
Galapagos Art and Performance Space
70 North 6th St. (Wythe/Kent), Wiiliamsburg, Brooklyn

SUNDAY June 12, 7pm
10th Anniversary Screening
Half-Cocked
Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky, 1995, 80 minutes

"Life among would-be rockers gets a strikingly true-to-life treatment
in this deapan road movie. Living in a crash house with too many
spongers, Tara and her lazy friends need a way out of their going-no-where
jobs. Relief of sorts arrives one night at a gig by a band featuring her
brother, a posturing rock-star-in-his-own-mind. Anoyed by his antics,
Tara impulsively swipes his equipment-filled van, inviting her friends
along for the ride.

"The joyride ends with the gang nearly broke in Chattanooga. After an
inept attempt at shoplifting, they stumble into a music store where they
announce themselves as a band and score a gig as openers in a show that
night. Since none of the party can play, they simply turn up the voume
and distortion to create a grating cacophony that alienates most
clubgoers but wins admiration from the headliners, who hand them the night's
profits.

"Thus is Truckstop, as the band dubs itself, launched on an impromptu,
illegal tour of the South. We follow the group, tired, hungry, and
broke, through sleazy clubs, crowded hotel roooms, and broken-down
transportation. Half-Cocked is a serio-comic look at low-rent rock-and-roll on
the road." - Godfrey Cheshire

"Long out of print on VHS, the first feature from filmmaking team Suki
Hawley and Michael Galinsky (Radiation, Horns and Halos, Code 33) has
nearly disappeared into indie-rock legend--many people who own its
Matador soundtrack CD might not even know there's a real movie that went
with it. Like Hawley-Galinsky's later documentaries, Half-Cocked finds a
way to shape everyday realities into gritty metaphors for why we live
how we do. in this case, southern slacker kids, adrift in small-city
recession, play fictionalized versions of themselves; the cast includes
Tara Jane O'Neill and Ian Svenonious. Their sketchy adventures in a van
full of stolen musical gear work as a deadbeat Gen-X myth of origins:
life on the road, with nowhere to go." - Ed Halter

Filmmakers Suki Hawley and Mike Galinsky will be in attendance.
