City Issues Boil-Water Notices

The city of Jackson's water system seems to be fighting a battle against shifting Yazoo clay.

Today, the Mississippi Department of Health posted on its website a precautionary boil-water notice for Laura Avenue. Yesterday, the city posted a notice for Petit Bois.

Last night, city crews worked a break at Bienville and Suncrest drives, WJTV reports, adding that the areas affected include Avery Circle, Whitworth Street, Forest Park Drive and River Oaks Place.

Public Works Director Dan Gaillet said the city's old, corroded pipes get some of the blame, but that this week's heavy rain caused some pipes to shift and break.

“We’re working to fix others in the city and we’re dealing with the major ones first,” Gaillet told WJTV.

A boil-water notice does not mean that your water is unsafe, but residents must take precautions and boil water before consuming it. For cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing your teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding your pets, washing dishes and all other consumption, bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before using it. The city of Jackson will inform residents when boil-water precautions are no longer necessary.
