Description

The Mississippi Girlchoir began in 1995 under the leadership of Ms. Lillian Lee. The group started with just 17 young women and has grown to more than 100 voices divided in four distinct choirs:

Bel Canto — touring and performing choir for older girls.
Lyrica — voices in training for Bel Canto.
Jubilate — an intermediate choir.
Prima — beginning voices.

The Mississippi Girlchoir also serves as a grooming organization for many of the girls interested in pursuing careers in musical performance or music education. Here they receive the very best in classical training to enable them to apply for college scholarships. Even the girls not majoring in music go on to sing in college choirs all across the county and throughout Mississippi. The Girlchoir also teaches these talented young women leadership qualities such as self-discipline, confidence, responsibility, and team-work.

Since its inauguration, The Mississippi Girlchoir has performed in Italy, England, Australia, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, New York, Chicago, and many other locations worldwide. The Girlchoir has also performed at a variety of local-area community events including Fondren Unwrapped and Jackson’s Christmas at the Old Capitol. This past year, many of our girls were selected to participate in Honor Choirs around the nation.

The Mississippi Girlchoir has been in performance with:
• Vienna Boys choir
• American Boychoir
• Mississippi Symphony Orchestra
• Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra
• Mississippi Voices of America
• Capitol Brass
• Jackson Choral Society
• Millsaps Singers
• Mississippi College Choir
• Mississippi Opera
• The Mississippi Chorus

Scholarships given to many of our young members enable talented young women from all ages, races, and backgrounds to come together and share their passion and love for music with others.
