Dr. Samuel Okoye has served low-income families in the metro area and across Mississippi for over 15 years

Jackson physician Dr. Samuel Okoye received national recognition when the Congressional Medal of Honor Society awarded him the Above & Beyond Citizen Honor on March 25. The award is remarkable in part because it comes from a society of all living recipients of the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor in the United States.

Okoye has served low-income families in the metro area and across the state for over 15 years, providing health screenings and education for over 10,000 uninsured Mississippians. In 1994, Okoye founded Community Outreach for Health Awareness, a Jackson-based non-profit organization that aims to reduce disparities in health care by providing more preventive care and education to underserved populations. Through community health fairs, parent mentoring programs and disease screenings, COHA reduces health care costs for low-income individuals, warding off costlier treatments later on.
