Working for the Weekend?

"Emmett Till" at the Smith Robertson Museum closes Monday.

It's Friday, and that means it's time to plan your weekend. Today, get a jump on barbecues and picnics by heading to the new farmer's market at the Jackson Medical Mall. Then, stick around for the celebrity roast fundraiser at 6 p.m., honoring the man who came up with the idea of the Medical Mall, Dr. Aaron Shirley. At 8 p.m., join Salsa Mississippi for another rooftop dance party at Fondren Corner. If your party shoes don't do salsa, check the JFP Music Listings to see who's playing at your favorite watering hole. You'll find blues, rock, soul, country and a whole lot more, including karaoke if you're a DIY kind of partier.

Saturday morning beat the heat by heading to the local markets early. Take your pick from the Mississippi Farmer's Market, the Greater Belhaven Market or the Congress Street Market. Each one has its own special focus, so be sure to visit them all while the summer's best is still available. In the afternoon, be sure to visit the Emmett Till exhibit at Smith Robertson Museum before it's gone. It closes Monday, so this is your last opportunity. Or, support the local arts scene by visiting the Fischer Gallery and Matthew Puckett's new work. Find more art gallery information on the JFP gallery listings page. For Saturday night options, check the JFP Music Listings before heading out the door, or the Events Calendar and Best Bets for even more options.

Sunday, head to the Women's Celebration Service at Christ Chapel Church of God in Christ at 9 a.m., and then head out for a fabulous brunch and music at Sophia's or Fitzgerald's. Walk off brunch with a visit to one of Jackson's great museums. See "Name Change: One Artist, Twelve Personas, Thirty-Five Years" at the Mississippi Museum of Art, along with the Mississippi Invitational. Or, grab the kids and go see "Monsters of the Deep" at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Where can you find other options for Sunday? The JFP Events Calendar, of course.

As always, don't forget to check the JFP Restaurant Listings and the Menu Guide for the best of Jackson's dining options.
