Biloxi Sun-Herald: Printing in Ga.; Blogging From Biloxi

http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/

According to a story in Editor and Publisher the Biloxi-based Sun Herald is still without power, but is being produced and printed by sister paper (Knight-Ridder owned) Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus, GA. Some reporters have found their way to the Sun Herald building, however, and have been reporting online, including video and audio.

A few of the enterprising reporters have put up the blog "Eyes on Katrina," using Blogger to cobble together a site that is linked from the Sun Herald's Web site. The blog and the Sun Herald's site seem to be working to get news from the smaller towns on the coast, including tibits from readers and calls that have gotten in to residents, such as this report from Bay St. Louis:

I'm in Dallas, but I talked to my daughter who is there. Total destruction from the Bay Bridge to St. Stanislaus. She also said Coleman Ave. and Nicholson Ave. suffered mass destruction. Lost communication, but this is the last I heard. Our prayers are with everyone back home. Haven't heard from daughters, Melanie D. or Donna B. Please contact us if at all possible.

Also interesting is that Biloxi PD is reported to have "debunked" reports that 30 people died in a single apartment building (in fact, they just read that again on CNN Headlines News as fact while I was typing) so that might be better news than first reported.

McGilverry debunked reports of 30 deaths at a single apartment complex in Biloxi. He said initial reports that included successful rescues were merged with actual fatalities.

Also, the Sun-Herald has a town-by-town report for the Coast as it stands now.

The Sun-Herald just posted a story with ideas for helping out, if you're interested in making a donation online or by phone to the various charities that will be helping with Katrina rescue and clean-up: http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/special_packages/hurricane_katrina/12507967.htm

I don't know if this will help, but I have friends who have family and loved ones still unaccounted for, so I just set up a temporary Yahoo group for messages. Phone circuits are jammed, you can't get thru, but some people are able to communicate via the internet. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/findfamilyfromkatrina/ I set it up so that anyone, member or not, can post giving or requesting information. They may have to get a yahoo id set up if they don't have one - I hope not, because I know there's not time enough to fool with that.
