As a native Mississippian, who has known Choke Lumumba for more than thirty five years, there is no doubt, Chokwe Lumumba is the people's candidate. He has proven himself in the city of Jackson, the citizens knows him, and the work he has done for the people. Under his learedship, Jackson, will become one of the most progressive cities in America. I hope to see him create a committee, to work with the Mississippi Legislature, to create legislaltion to help decrease the prison population, not only to help people, stay out of prison, but legislation to help people get out of prison, for sentences that fell under the Truth and Sentencing Laws, whereby, defendants were faced with mandatory minumum sentences. There are many more Mandatory minumum laws, that need to be revisted. Jackson is on the move, when people come out to vote, on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, you will have on your mind, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LET NOBODY TUTN YOU AROUND, Jackson is on the move, be a part of rebuilding Jackson, Mississippi, by the PEOPLE"S CANDIDATE, Chokwe Lumumba.

10 Candidates Don't Belong Here

By kWelchlin

14 Candidates

What mutilated perception of Harvey Johnson or the City of Jackson exists when all these "leap-year" part-time politicians come out of the woodwork? I'm no Johnson apologist, in any way, shape or form. How bad has Johnson created this civic self-image when so many under-qualified candidates emerge?

In many respects he reminds me of the second term of George W. Bush, when he was re-elected I felt my own self image increase. My personal goals were realigned, because, if George Bush can become POTUS, twice, I may be able to become the UN Secretary General, or at least Mayor of Jackson. (sarcasm alert)

I do have an ego, but that doesn't qualify me for mayor.

9 Senators ran for Hardin's seat, 8 of the 9 filed campaign finance reports on-time. 9 out of the 9 had total campaign funds of a fraction of Lumumba's . Perhaps Barry Howard should use his 'certified seed' to hire an accounting temp.

New of HIV Cure Worries Advocates

By justjess

Snce I'm always one of the first to complain about MS being the last in everything GOOD and the FRST in everything BAD, I wanted to be FIRST in congratulating Dr. Gay and her medical intervention that has given hope for a MS child to live a life without HIV/AIDS.

I saw the intrview on national news (CNN) this am. We must still promote the practice of safe sex to counter our high numbers (third in the nation) for diagnosed cases of HIV/AIDS.

Common Misconceptions About The First Amendment and Public Speech

By moderndaymachiavelli

Unfortunately so many people out there with a voice have a severe misconception of the First Amendment and Public Speech it makes me sad. Many times people say things publicly that bite them in the rear, and people come out of the "wood work" to defend them in the name of free speech and the First Amendment. Most of the time it is usually a public figure who says something that most people find wrong , or even offensive. Other times it happens when people speak an unpopular opinion on a privately controlled forum. Believe it or not these two examples really have nothing to do with the First Amendment.

The obvious example on everyone's mind right now is Miami Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen. Several days ago Ozzie said some things in a Time Magazine interview that could be considered somewhat "unsettling" to many Marlins fans. He seemed to be very pro Castro, even going as far to say "I love Castro". immediately people began to debate the topic, but when Ozzie's suspension was announced, people came to his rescue in the name of the First Amendment. One of these defenders (not to pick on anyone) is Jen Floyd Engel, a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Ms Engel seems to think that Ozzie and his five game suspension by the Miami Marlins is a First Amendment issue. Actually nothing could be farther from the truth. The subtitle of her article says it all, "What Ozzie said was bad, but Marlins' disregard for First Amendment is worse." I have to take issue with Ms. Engel's article altogether. First of all the First Amendment protects against two basic aspects of speech, the ability to voice or "express" (see Texas v. Johnson) speech and protection from what is known as prior restraint. The First Amendment in no way provides protections from private entities such as business and individuals, it is intended to keep the government from prohibiting speech.

How about a more obvious scenario. Let's say Acme Widget Company is a leading producer of widget's and is a very well-known and popular company. During an interview with a business magazine one of Acme's executives states that the widget's produced by the company are substandard, cheaply made, and just aren't worth a damn. He goes on in the interview to insult the people who purchase the product and alienates them. Does Acme Widget Company have the right to terminate this executives employment??? Your damn right they do, and you wonder why? Because the First Amendment protects individuals from government infringement on speech not repercussions from business and social contracts throughout a person's life. That executive had every legal right to say what he wanted to say without the exercise of prior restraint and fear of government action. Just as the Acme Widget Company has a right to protect its image and somewhat control the image it wants to project.

What about another example that has recently been a hot topic in ...

K.Flay releases the mixtape West Ghost

By mowilson

K.Flay's status as a white girl rapper already sets her apart from the pack, but her mix of electro, modern rock, and hip-hop is what really defines her as an artist. Her second mixtape West Ghost continues showcasing the same themes of alienation, dysfunction, and mental issues as her previous work. Despite the somewhat seriousness of the subject matter, K.Flay keeps things moving with her snappy rhymes and soulfull hooks. Standouts include the wavy "Another Round", materialist "Appetite For Consumption", and the old-school yet fresh title track.

Stream the mixtape via K.Flay's soundcloud below, and download the mixtape via her website http://www.kflay.com

Petitioning the MS State Legislature: Endorse Sensible Gun Safety Regulation

By stprather

Dear friends and fellow Mississippians,

In light of recent remarks by Gov. Bryant, who, in mid-January, urged the MS State Legislature to use its powers to “deem illegal” and block any new gun safety measures proposed by the federal government, and in light of recent Bills passed by the State Legislature which further weaken the regulatory capacity of the state with respect to public transparency and accountability about personal firearms, I have written a short petition calling for our elected state officials to change direction and take a stand for common sense measures designed to promote gun safety and responsibility.

The language and intent of this petition is general, and, I believe, should find widespread support from thoughtful Mississippians of any and all political stripes. Please consider the words and spirit of this message carefully, and, if you find yourself of one mind with my concern to send a clear message to our state leaders about sober concern for our children, our streets and our homes, please sign this online petition and pass it on to fellow Mississippians for their consideration. While I have not “restricted” potential signees to Mississippi residents, this petition is first and foremost for state residents to send a message to our leaders. With that in mind, if we can reach 100 Mississippian signees by March 7th, 2013, I will attempt to take this petition further to local news agencies and other public outlets, with the hopes of gaining wider support. If we reach that stage and do gain support wider than our personal networks of friends and family, I pledge to do what little I can to make sure this petition is delivered to the named state officials, and to see to it that they respond.

Again, this message is meant to unite us on a path toward better, more serious and less polarized dialogue about basic matters of common freedom, security and hope, not to be divisive. Please feel free to be in touch with me about any questions, comments, concerns or suggestions you might have.

I met Regina Quinn For Mayor!!

Regina Quinn for Mayor....

By ssmith2002

I am writing because I’ve not seen much about Jackson’s Mayoral race up until last week. I attended a prayer breakfast for Regina Quinn and it was awesome. This lady is well versed and I feel she has the best interest for the city of Jackson. Not only is she qualified, but experienced. I approached her with such ease, and let me tell you, she’s approachable! There were several clergymen that attended this breakfast. Our main focus was uplifting our city and establishing new leadership. I was impressed. So, to all the candidates that are hiding and not engaging us as citizens, I met Regina Quinn and I strongly endorse her for Mayor. She focused on crime and our economy. Lastly, she knows how to listen and address our concerns.
