JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Gov. Phil Bryant has set special elections to fill two vacant seats in the Mississippi House.
Republican Rep. Herb Frierson of Poplarville quit June 30 to become Revenue Commissioner, while Rep. Bobby Shows of Ellisville retired July 1. Both Republicans had served since 1992.
Shows' seat, District 89, covers parts of Jones County. District 106, Frierson's seat, covers parts of Lamar and Pearl River counties.
Bryant's office said Wednesday that candidates' qualifying deadline is Oct. 10 and the election is Nov. 8, the same day as the presidential election.
If runoffs are needed, they will be Nov. 29.
Candidates in special elections run without party labels, but they often tell voters their party affiliation.
The winner will fill more than three years of a four-year term.
