JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Republican Party leaders have adopted a resolution saying they oppose Medicaid expansion.
State GOP chairman Joe Nosef said Tuesday that the party executive committee acted on the document Monday.
He says it's a way to support Republican elected officials, including Gov. Phil Bryant, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and House Speaker Philip Gunn.
Under the health law signed by President Barack Obama, states have the option of expanding Medicaid coverage to people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level. The federal government would pay most of the tab.
Democrats in the Mississippi Legislature have pushed for expansion. Last week, they said working poor Mississippians should have the option of using federal money to buy private health insurance. Bryant dismissed that idea as a rebranding of Medicaid expansion.
