Suspect Jeremy Powell Committed Suicide After Shooting Officer

UPDATE: The Associated Press is reporting: Miss. investigators say suspect shot officer, then himself, at Jackson police headquarters

On April 4, 2013, at 5:40 p.m. a shooting occurred in the Jackson Police Department Headquarters located at 327 East Pascagoula Street.

The preliminary investigation reveals that two individuals were fatally shot. One individual is a Jackson Police Department Detective, Eric Smith, a black male, 40 years old, died as a result of gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead in JPD Headquarters.

The second deceased individual identified as Jeremy Powell, black male, age 23 years old also died as a result of gunshot wounds. According to preliminary investigation, Powell was in the process of being arrested for the murder of Christopher Alexander, which occurred on April 1, 2013.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations will be the primary investigative agency for this incident. All questions should be referred to their agency’s Public Information Officer, Warren Strain at 601.850.9310.

Detective Smith has been employed with the Jackson Police Department since June 12, 1995, and was assigned to the Robbery Homicide Division.
