Jackson Violent Crimes Drop 18 Percent Last Week

Violent crimes in Jackson decreased by 18 percent last week, along with an overall 3 percent decrease in all major crimes, according to statistics released at a Jackson Police Department command staff meeting this morning for the week ending Nov. 29. For the year to date, violent crime is down 9.8 percent, while property crime is up slightly at 1.2 percent. Jackson has seen 38 homicides this year to date, compared to 66 by this time last year.

Officers reported 192 total property crimes last week, the same number as the previous week. Auto burglaries and house burglaries, the two categories responsible for the small increase in property crime, both dropped last week: Auto burglaries dropped by 21 percent from the previous week, and house burglaries by 2.4 percent.

Reporting on Operation Safe Shop, the department's crime-suppression effort during the holiday shopping season, Precinct 4 Commander Kenneth Goodrum told command staff that his officers reported only one incident during the operation's first week.

That incident was an attempted armed robbery at the County Line Road Red Lobster, Goodrum said. On Nov. 27, three white females reported that car carrying three white males pulled up alongside their vehicle after they parked. One of the three males, wearing a camouflage coat and no shoes, got out of the car and brandished a gun at the female driver. He returned to his car, however, apparently spooked when the vehicle's other two occupants fled.
