Give Wal-Mart A Break

Y'all should give Wal-Mart a break. I love Wal-Mart on Highway 18. The people who work there are friendly and very helpful. The range of goods is low to moderate. I'm a fan of their housewares section. Now if we all had the income to shop at McRae's, then their stores would not be closing. Overpriced is overpriced. Another set of stores that do compete with Wal-Mart's food is New Deal. The secret to New Deal and Wal-Mart is the working people speak with their feet, their cars or buses. Service is a major reason both stores are successful.

I have fun at Wal-Mart and New Deal. When I shop, it is a date. You can meet a man at Wal-Mart and get your groove on in the produce section. Fresh is fresh. The meat wins the day every time. New Deal is like attending a family reunion. Wal-Mart is a convention on a budget, so the other stores better learn and stop complaining 'cause I'm not giving up my partying space to no one. When Dillards really has a sale, then maybe people will listen to your complaints.

In the meantime, I'm waiting for Bobby Rush to come to Wal-Mart and release his latest album. And if Wal-Mart really wants to see even greater sales, they should invite Pat Brown to sing one Saturday and watch the sales go through the roof.

Who's Whispering?

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld stated that he was not consulted about the decision to invade Iraq. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says he was not consulted, either. If these statements are true, just whom did Bush get his advice from? Are they telling us that the president of the United States, who had no interest in foreign affairs other than to have visited Mexico a few times while living in Texas and may have had a few foreign players on his baseball team, did not consult with his secretaries of state and defense before taking this country to war?

What top advisers did he consult? Visions from Above? Or whispers from the Halliburton rep next door? These are important questions that the American people and press are just beginning to ask. The questions that have not been asked yet are as telling. Do we as Americans have the right to decide the fate of Iraq or any other country for that matter? And does American foreign policy assume that we dominate the world by threat of preemptive military strike anywhere anytime?

” I love Wal-Mart on Highway 18. The people who work there are friendly and very helpful. The range of goods is low to moderate.” I had to respond to this! This particular Wal-Mart is horrible. The workers, or as Wal-Mart labels them “associates”, are rude and in general aren’t helpful!

If Wal-Mart is a "date", it's a date with a cheap, frigid man that will buy you wilting roses, poorly manufactured clothing, and camoflage anything with a dash of Stetson or Drakkar aftershave. Of course, some people might find that attractive. ;-) The only thing Wal-Mart has going for it is fresh produce but something tells me that's not because it's pulling from local vendors and more to do with antibiotics and strange chemicals pumped into them. Their bananas are unusually large and stay ripe for Frankenstein-lengths of time. Want groceries on the cheap? Hit Piggly Wiggly. Better yet, buy more premium, whole and/or organic foods that cost a little more, are rich in flavor and nutrients, and require less to feed you. Want clothing on the cheap? Try consignment stores, Hudsons, Freds, Roses, or any of the number of independently-owned stores like KJs or the huge selection of them in Metrocenter. Hell, even Gap and Old Navy have a huge dose of respect for their employees and have wonderful employee benefits and programs (not to mention recognition of same-sex partner benefits). Wal-mart's certainly not the ONLY place to shop for "low" prices and "friendly" faces. Last time I went there (with my brother -- who has no issues with Wally-World -- on a miserable shopping experience two weeks ago), the poor cashier had been working for 9 hours and had to be back in less than 8 hours to start work at 4am for a 10 hour shift. Needless to say, she wasn't sporting a friendly face "but had to pay for Xmas somehow."
