OK, it's out. In our JFP Interview with James Meredith this week, he has the best. quotes. ever. about Sarah Palin and Barack Obama: "Other than James Meredith, I’ve concluded that Barack Obama is the smartest person ever come into the world." and "I don’t even know if Sarah Palin knows that she’s in the race because—like that Canadian woman (CBC’s Heather Mallick) said—she’s white trash. I think she probably actually believes that she’s probably as good a person as ever been born."

Wow Ladd, you were right when you said that the politcs were going to get a lot more ugly. You claimed that this potential ugliness instills fear in you. Ladd: "That's the part I fear: the ugliness still to come." But now you think that Palin being called "white trash" is among the "best. quotes. ever." That's hardly constructive criticism. While I deeply respect James Merideth, I hardly think that his resorting to nasty name calling is something to get excited about...much less referring to it as one of the greatest quotes in the history of quotes.

mc, it's a *great* quote, whether you agree or not. And I don't think it's nasty name-calling at all if you pay attention to what he is saying. Secondly, I think there's a lot of truth to it, sadly. I think she was put up because they believe she is white trash who will draw the white vote away from Obama. I believe that is what Mr. Meredith is saying as well. The saddest part of all is that she is clearly being used, and it could kill her career by the time all the skeletons are pulled from her closet. That doesn't mean she didn't have potential, but it reminds me of Frank Melton making the young guy the lobbyist for the city when he had no idea what he was doing. Throwing them to the wolves doesn't help anyone, especially the person who gets devoured. All that said, I don't have a lot of sympathy for Palin. She seems to make her own bed with her treatment of people. By the way, I grew up white trash, and I have no qualms about saying so. But I have tried to lift myself out of it, even as Palin—or worse, the McCain handlers, through her—seems to try to use it to appeal to those with lesser education. That's really sad, and I think it will backfire because the American people are smarter than they're being given credit for by the McCain campaign.
