Jackson Crime Stats for August 3-9

File Photo
Jackson crime is down, according to statistics.

by Ward Schaefer
August 12, 2009

Jackson saw a significant reduction in major crimes last week, according to a weekly report (PDF) released at today's Jackson Police Department command staff meeting. Jackson police reported 200 crimes from August 3 through August 9, a 25 percent reduction from the previous week. All four precincts reported decreases in both violent and property crime, with Northeast Jackson's Precinct 4 reporting the fewest crimes and the greatest percentage decrease from the previous week.

Auto burglaries and house burglaries, the two most vexing categories for Jackson police this summer, both dropped last week. Auto burglary totals were also 25 percent below those from the same week last year, though the city's 64 house burglaries this week were still roughly even with last year's figures.

This year to date, violent crime is down 9 percent in the city, compared to last year. That decrease hold true for all categories except armed robbery, which is up four percent from last year. Property crimes for the year to date are comparable with last year, except for business burglaries, which are down 22 percent, and auto burglaries, which are 11 percent above last year's totals.

Where are all of the negative commenters now? I know that this does not signify that Jackson is crime free, but its a glimmer of hope that we haven't had in a while. If JPD can put together a few more of these kind of numbers it will send a message that things are turning around.

If this were the Clarion-Ledger, the negative types would've already taken over before the ink on the print could dry.

BTW, speaking of the aforementioned C-L, I checked their website to see if they posted this story...still waiting.
