Now in the homestretch of its effort to finish out 2011 with a reduction in overall crime, the Jackson Police Department released its crime report for the week of Dec. 5, 2011 through Dec. 11, 2011.

It looks like JPD officers have their work cut out for them in a few areas. Despite a decrease in the total number of violent crimes, homicides, aggravated assaults, and rapes saw increases of more than 20 percent.

Compared to 2010, aggravated assaults increased 29.6 percent.

Homicides are up 22.5 percent, up to 49 for 2011, over 40 for last year.

Rape also increased 24.3 percent, from 103 in 2010 to 128 in 2011.

Total property crimes are also trending down for the year, but grand larcenies and house burglaries are each up about 5 percent from 2010, according to the report.
