Election for Ward 6 Council Seat Set for June 17

Jackson City Council met today to announce that an election for the Ward 6 City Council seat, which was made available by Tony Yarber's election to mayor, will be held June 17, 2014. The qualifying deadline for the election is May 28.

Both Tyrone Hendrix, a longtime Democratic operative, and Robert Amos, who competed in the 2013 Democratic primary for Jackson mayor, have both confirmed that they are considering running for the Ward 6 position: http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2014/may/01/hendrix-amos-among-ward-6-possibles/" rel="nofollow">http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/....

Hendrix helped manage Jonathan Lee's campaign for mayor in 2013 and worked with Regina Quinn during the recent special election for mayor. Amos ran for mayor of Jackson in 2009 and for a seat on the Hinds County Board of Supervisors in 2011.

A runoff election, should it be in order, is set for July 1.

Here's an interesting question JFP: Do these 2 individuals mentioned above actually live in Ward 6? Please let the voters in Ward 6 know this before you start giving us candidates please!

@Knowledge06 If you have any information that suggests that the two individuals above do not live in Ward 6, I'd be happy to look into it further. However, it is usually understood that whoever represents Ward 6 also lives in Ward 6.

You speak as if the JFP has given you these canidates. All she is doing is reporting who has comfirmed to run in this election as of now.

HaleyFerretti If YOU have information to prove that they DO live in Ward 6 please provide it. It is NEVER understood that someone running for political office actual lives where they represent (just look at most of the legislature). So NO, residents of Ward 6 want to know if a candidate actual LIVES in the ward and didn't just obtain an address to run for office. WE won't be gamed!

js1976, NO ONE is confirmed to run in the election. The article merely speculates. Calm down and read!

I'm quite calm I assure you. If not, I would be typing words in all caps like others on this thread!

I will rephrase my initial statment though, she is reporting who has confirmed that they are considering running for the vacant seat. My point still stands, she didn't cherry pick these canidates herself.

I can certainly check databases to see what addresses pop up for them. I'll do that later today, since you're insisting. I'm certainly not implying that neither lives in the district, though.

This should definitely be an interesting election.

Tyrone Hendrix already has signs at the corner of Terry/Elton Rd. That was quick. The young man needs to understand though that those of us who actually LIVE in Ward 6 have questions that he and whoever else decides to run will have to answer. Ward 6 covers a large area and of course all areas of Ward 6 are not the same. The candidates need to KNOW where they are representing and know WHY they want to represent. Much needs to be done and the laborers have been few.
