John Oliver Starts Miss. Company; Buys and Forgives $15m in Medical Debt

In a segment highlighting how easy it is to buy up old medical debt and learn about the patients who have it, John Oliver on his show "Last Week Tonight" put together a shell company to do just that.

Amusingly, he formed the company online in Mississippi via the Secretary of State's website, and then (less amusingly, but, yeah, we get it) makes fun of Mississippi, saying it's best to visit the state over the Internet. (Welp... we're not exactly owning the news cycle right now.)

From there, he recounts how his new company was able to buy near $15 million in medical debt (and the records of those owing the money, including their social security numbers) and then turn the entire file over to a non-profit that specializes in forgiving medical debt legally.
