Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair announced Thursday that he's retiring after 13 seasons in the NFL. McNair, a Mount Olive native, was a legend and Heisman Trophy candidate at Alcorn State before being taken in the first round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He moved to Tennessee with the team and led the Titans to the Super Bowl in 1999. He was named the NFL co-MVP in 1999. Injuries have taken their toll on McNair in recent years. He was traded to the Ravens in 2005.
The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to pay running back Deuce McAllister a $1 million roster bonus on Tuesday. Will McAllister, who has been sidelined by knee injuries twice in the last three seasons, get his money? Or will he have to take a pay cut if he wants to remain with the Saints?

Just in time for Wednesday night's home opener, Mississippi Braves outfielder Jordan Schafer has been suspended for 50 games for using human growth hormone. The Roger Clemens wannabe is ranked as one of the Braves' top prospects and was expected to be Atlanta's starting center fielder no later than 2009. At least he won't have to play in Pearl for a while.

Murrah high school's girls basketball team is ranked No. 8 in USA Today's final poll. The Lady Mustangs (32-2) won the Class 5A state title. Ranked No. 5 is Indianola Gentry (40-0), the 4A champ. The Lady Rams defeated Murrah in the Grand Slam last month.
Mississippi State baseball coach Ron Polk will resign at the end of the season, The Clarion-Ledger is reporting. He has recommended long-time assistant and former MSU player Tommy Raffo as his replacement.

Four Mississippi college basketball teams are headed for postseason play. In a sign of changing times, Ole Miss even delayed the start of spring football practice to avoid interfering with the Rebels NIT game on Wednesday. Millsaps defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 57-56 on Saturday night at the Hangar Dome in the NCAA Division III regionals. The Majors are going to the Sweet 16 for just the third time in school history.
The tears flow as Brett Favre officially announces that he is retiring from the Green Bay Packers after 17 seasons in the NFL. "I know I can play but I don't think I want to," the Mississippi native and former Southern Miss star says. "It's been a great career for me, but it's over."

The Jackson Whatevers, a South Coast League expansion team, won't be coming to Smith-Wills Stadium this year, after all. A team in Florida won't be able to play this season because its stadium isn't ready, so the league contracted to four teams. The league, which has been bleeding money since it began in 2007, says it will field a team in Jackson in 2009. We'll see.
In case you're wondering, Doctor S saw the "FNL" movie (it was good), read some of the book (it was OK) and has yet to watch one second of the TV series (NBC sucks, y'know).
