Whitlow Newsletter: Melton Follows the Leader!
It seems the “You know me and you know what I’ll do,” crime plan of the Democrat Mayoral nominee has become specific. In a May 30th Clarion Ledger article “Stabbing 3rd Killing in 3 Days,” it was refreshing to see that Rick’s opponent has embraced the zero-tolerance philosophy for crime reduction. As you know Rick has outlined his zero-tolerance plan for the last several months on his website and in great detail in an article entitled, “Whitlow on Crime,” posted May 20th. It is clear that the true leader in the Mayoral race is Rick Whitlow. Welcome aboard to the Democrat nominee. Remember, LEADERSHIP MATTERS !

COMMENTS
Here's the Ledge article to which the release refers.
Is one suppose to take the warm weather theories seriously? That last quote by Melton seems really absurd.
Here's the quote:
"I want to make sure we have swift punishment and change the hearts and minds of Jacksonians committing these crimes. The weather is changing and tempers are flaring, but I am flat out not going to tolerate it."
Walker's right; that is some sound bite. What does that quote mean? Why doesn't the reporter then ask, "Well, Mr. Melton, what are you going to do specifically to make sure this doesn't happen again?" They seem completely incapable of asking real questions these days at The Ledge.

BTW, Walker, I think there is some truth to the warm-weather theoriesómore people are out and such. I remember this being an issue in NYC as well, with crime often going up during the summer.
However, it is interesting to note in that storyóand I just didóhow many fewer murders we've had this year from January to May than last year. It looks like we had had 24 homicides last year by the end of May, and 15 this year, including the three this weekend. That's a pretty impressive percentage drop over allóalthough as I always say, overall crime stats mean nothing. What matters it the how, when, what and where-the-damn-weapon-came from in crime casesóand how it could have been prevented. Every murder should be dealt with that way.
Instead, inevitably, we get sensationalism. And sound bites. For, as much as I think the "warm weather" thing has some merit, I'm left wondering from Melton's "not going to tolerate it" quote just what he is going to do about the weather. And the flaring tempers. And the hearts and minds. And the crime itself.
It's a week away from the election, and he hasn't told us, yet.

Yes, I'd speculate too a link between weather and crime, for sure, but it just seems strange that the quotes deal exclusively with that aspect. Moreover, Melton's "not going to tolerate it" quip seems really conceited, since the crime's been perpetrated and his toleration of it is moot, plus it's tough-guy talk that draws more attention to Melton than to the crime.
They say weather and crime have a curvilinear relationship. First, it's important to note that most studies have found December, July and August are significantly more likely to be among the months in which homicide is high for any given year but the number might not be drastically higher than other months.
Back to weather and crime. If I remember correctly, this is called 'thermic law' and deals with agression and hot temperatures. According to the studies I once read (discussing the curvilinear relationship), as temperatures rise, so do aggression levels -- to a point; at that point, temperature can continue to rise but aggression levels will begin to decrease.
There are boundless numbers of theories on crime and weather including familial disputes and ozone levels, extreme weather and reduction in crimes, arid days producing higher numbers of crimes and so forth.
I don't know that any have proven to be 100% accurate or that a general consensus has been reached.
Maybe it all deals with "it's warm, let's go outside" and then the lethargic attitude of our "dog days" kicks in and everyone's too hot and sweaty to get revenge, murder someone, or whatever...
Weather, regardless of its influence on our levels of tolerance and aggression, should not be an excuse or primary reason for anyone's death. I get hot and sweaty all the time and have never murdered a person. If anything, these studies show there may be a relationship but the overall roots of the "problems" are still not addressed.

"Thermic law"? The things you know, Knol. ;-)
BTW, my number of homicides from January to May last year was wrongóI should have typed 21 instead of 24.
