After a press conference this morning announcing his six-point platform, Jackson mayoral candidate Frank Melton told the Jackson Free Press that he supports Adequate Education funding and was headed to a meeting with Gov. Haley Barbour to talk about it. "I think we have to fully fund education," Melton said after the press conference at City Hall.

Melton said he and Barbour were going to talk about the "waste" that the governor says is happening in some Mississippi school districts. Melton said he has not yet discussed the needs of Jackson Public Schools with district officials and how the Adequate Education proposal would affect the district. He did, however, say that he would demand that the Legislature supporting funding. "I'm going to encourage someone to file a lawsuit (against the Legislature) if they don't fully fund it," he said.

At the press conference, Melton introduced a six-point platform, which he called "Leadership Issues":

Major Crime Reduction
Jobs and Economic Development
Streets and Infrastructure
Housing and Urban Decay
Education and Youth Development
Cooperation with Local, County and State officials

Melton passed out a statement explaining in more detail how he would tackle those area. Please watch the JFP for more details on that statement and his other comments at the press conference.
