JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Supreme Court is ratifying the removal from office of a Madison County judge, even though voters already defeated him in 2015.
The court Thursday upheld the recommendation of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance that former Justice Court Judge Bill Weisenberger be removed.
The judicial watchdog agency filed that recommendation three days before Wiesenberger left office after losing his re-election bid. The Supreme Court suspended Wiesenberger earlier in 2015.
Thursday, the court fined Wiesenberger $1,000 and ordered him to pay $6,000 in costs.
Wiesenberger pleaded guilty in June to simple assault for striking a mentally disabled African-American man at a Canton flea market and using a racial slur in 2014.
He was sentenced to probation, fined $500, and agreed to never again seek office or law enforcement jobs.
