Albert "Al" Joyner, who owned businesses and contributed to charitable causes in Jackson, died today. He was 69.
Joyner was a member of the Jackson State University Development Foundation board and was a McDonald's franchise owner.
His brother, national radio personality Tom Joyner, host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show, came to Jackson to help serve meals at his brother's restaurant on U.S. 80 in Jackson.
"Great husband, father and brother. We'll miss him," Tom Joyner tweeted today.
Dr. Carolyn Meyers, president of JSU, said she and the campus community were saddened by the news.
"His presence will continue to be missed. He provided us with a strong model of community engagement and service. His character is a shining example we should all seek to emulate," Meyers said in a statement.
Mayor Tony Yarber also extended his condolences to the Joyner family, saying:
"As a successful businessman, he inspired others by his example. His commitment to the community and charitable causes helped to improve the lives of Jackson residents and students. We mourn the loss of a pioneer."
