Last week in the sports world we learned one major thing. President Barack Obama is more powerful than the “Redskins Rule.”
According to the “Redskins Rule,” if the Washington Redskins lose their final home game before a presidential election the incumbent or ruling party loses the election. Washington lost 21-13 to the Carolina Panthers before Tuesday’s election.
The president became just the second elected official to break the rule. In case you missed anything from the last week in sports, here is quick recap.
Mike Brown is already out as Los Angeles Lakers head coach after a 1-4 start. The firing was as quick as you can hit the panic button in an 82-game season.
Speaking of L.A. sports, I’m sure the footballs were inflated to their regulation requirements this weekend at USC. A rogue student manager under-inflated the USC game balls all on his own unbeknownst to any of the Trojans coaches (wink, wink).
College basketball began this weekend and two marquee games were supposed to take place on aircraft carriers. One game never made it past halftime and the other game was cancelled due to moisture on the court. These games are meant to be for the troops but the feel more like they are for TV ratings.
Massachusetts earned their win in program history at the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) level with a 22-14 win over Akron. The win left Southern Miss as the only FBS team without a victory this season.
Congratulations to the Minutemen for breaking their losing streak.
Best ending of a college football game this week was Florida against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Gators blocked a Ragin’-Cajuns punt as time expired and returned it for the game winning touchdown.
Several NFL coaches are on the hot seat already. Norv Turner in San Diego and Andy Reid in Philadelphia are the best bets to not make it to final week of the season. Both the Chargers and the Eagles are under-performing this season and slowly falling out of the playoff race. It might take a miracle for Turner and Reid to survive until the end of the season.
In college football, there has already been couple of coaches fired. Idaho already dumped Robb Akey who was 20-50 since taking the Vandals job in 2007.
Last week, Kentucky fired Joker Phillips in an open letter on the Wildcats athletic department website. Phillips, who will finish out this season, might have had 12-23 record in his three years at Kentucky, but he deserved better.
