Red Square Clothing Co. (1000 Highland Colony Parkway, Suite 9004, Ridgeland, (601) 853-8960) used holiday decorations in the store to raise money for a good cause.

The clothing store, located in Renaissance at Colony Park, bought a decorative tree from Glo Design Studio in Fondren (2951 Old Canton Road, (601) 368-9755) and dubbed it "the Crystal Charity Tree." Throughout the holiday season, shoppers purchased ornaments for $10 to hang on the tree, with proceeds benefiting the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children.

Joe Williams, Red Square's marketing director, said he and the store's owner, Myles Harris, considered raising money for many different charities in Jackson, but eventually settled on the children's hospital.

"Blair E. Batson is a hospital that's been very dear to my heart always, and I try to get involved with it whenever I can," Williams said. "So many people just go through a hard time this time of year."

Williams said Friday that the store had sold about 20 ornaments, raising about $200 for the hospital, although he expected to sell more on Christmas Eve as people came in to buy last-minute gifts. As people bought ornaments to hang on the tree, they received an entry into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to Red Square.

Williams said the staff has talked about doing similar fundraisers in the future around other holidays--perhaps hanging Easter eggs from the tree--to raise money for other charities and organizations in Jackson.

New Treatment for Heart Condition in Jackson

A new treatment for a deadly heart condition will soon be available in Jackson. Thanks to new technology, selected patients suffering from aortic stenosis can have relief from the disease without the strain of open-heart surgery.

The FDA approved the Edwards SAPIEN Valve in November, and Mississippi Baptist Medical Center will be the first site in the Jackson area to offer the treatment, the hospital said in a statement.

Aortic stenosis causes calcium to build up in the aortic valve of the heart, preventing it from opening fully and decreasing blood flow from the heart. The disease most often affects people 75 years old or older, though heart defects and other factors can cause the condition.

The new therapy involves placing a prosthetic valve into the body via a catheter inserted through the leg, meaning patients do not have to undergo open-heart surgery.
