City Responds to Storm

Verbatim statement: City of Jackson announces that emergency crews have been assessing storm damage. Preliminary reports indicate that portions of west and northwest Jackson have experienced storm damage including down power lines, fallen trees, roof damage, and scattered property damage.

No confirmed deaths or injuries have been reported at this time.

Transportation vans are staged at Fire Station no. 7 at the corner of North State and Northside Drive and individuals can be transported to Tougaloo Community Center at 318 Vine Street.

The Tougaloo Community Center is operating as an emergency shelter until further notice.

Public Works' crews along with emergency personnel are focusing on clearing streets and rights-of-ways as quickly as possible. Motorists should take note that downed trees and other debris may affect the afternoon community. Residents are urged to avoid down trees and power lines. To report down power lines, residents should call 1-800-OUTAGE.

Residents may report non-emergency damage by calling 3-1-1 from a landline or dial 601-960-1111 from any phone.

The Jackson Fire Department is also providing some assistance to the Clinton Fire Department.

More details will be provided when they become available.

Some preliminary damage includes: down trees on Clinton Blvd. at Shaw Rd., Queen Eleanor, Forest Ave. east of Hanging Moss, Northside at Sunset, Sunset at Medgar Evers.

Property damage has been reported at Malaco on Northside Drive, Lakewood Funeral Home on Clinton Blvd., and Industrial Dr., the Queens area and the Northwest Hills area.
