Jones Named Ole Miss Chancellor

The University of Mississippi—Ole Miss—announced the appointment of Dr. Dan Jones as its new chancellor yesterday. Jones succeeds retiring Robert Khayat July 1, to oversee the University, including the University's Medical Center here in Jackson. He is the 16th chancellor in the history of the school.

During a telephone interview with the Associated Press after the official announcement, Jones said he'll listen "to people in the university family and our state to work together and articulate what the vision of the university needs to be in the next few years."

"The university is in a very healthy place right now," Jones told the AP. "There's not an urgent need in resetting an agenda."

Jones has served as dean of medicine at UMC since 2003. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Mississippi College and received his medical degree from UMC in 1975.

"I am humbled. It's a great privilege to be a part of the university, which is in a great place because Chancellor Khayat has done a wonderful job," Jones said on the UMC Web site. "It's frightening to think about following in his footsteps, but my life has been about service, and I am committed to serving the university to the best of my ability."

I'm a State fan, but I have a ton of respect for Dr. Dan Jones. He and his wife are some of the most selfless people I have ever known. He has done very well in leadership roles all over the world, so I expect nothing but good things from him as he makes his way to Oxford.
