Bulldogs Ring Up Liberty Bowl Victory

Mississippi State used a ball-hawking defense and a last-minute burst of offense to defeat Central Florida, 10-3, Saturday in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn. A Liberty Bowl-record crowd of 63,000-plus saw the Bulldogs win in their first bowl game since 2000.

I was at the game. It was freakin' COLD. I think that what you will hear coming out of the game will be more about the cluster f*ck it was trying to get into the stadium and into your seat. They had three important gates CLOSED. This caused dangerous crowding in the hallways. People were pushing. I saw security and fans almost FIGHTING because it was so crushed inside the stadium. There was lots and lots of cursing. We arrived twenty minutes before kick off and didn't make it to our seats until halfway thru the first quarter. It was RIDICULOUS. I understand this place hasn't been sold out in twenty years...but there had to have been a better way to handle this situation.

I didn't even know who had won the game until the next day. I had been out of town Saturday and all the sports stations were playing the Patriots-Giants game. I was going for Central Florida, but I'll tip my hat to the Bulldogs for a a good win and good year.

Glad to see Mississippi State get in another bowl game and win something besides the rotten egg bowl. Maybe U. of Miss will have something good happens to them soon too.

I'm glad for MSU, but that was the singlemost BORING ballgame I have ever witnessed. I swore that if they went into overtime, I was taking a nap. I'm sorry you had to endure Memphis' poor planning, Lori. I was glad I didn't live there anymore when I saw that crowd!

I'll agree about the "boring" nature of the game. It wasn't good until the last three minutes. Then we were gnawing our lips off screaming "JUST SCORE ALREADY!!"...it was freaking cold and we were ready to be DONE.

MSU needs a star passing quarterback otherwise they will continue to be boring. My three grandsons will be star quarterback in about 10 - 17 years but they're going to Miami, Florida and Florida State or Jackson, State, Alcon or Valley. Whoever pays the most. We're not stupid despite our preference for the SWAC. If MSU has the money, we'll talk.

Yes it was a boring game except to those who prefer strong defensive play. I don't, and also don't enjoy watching low scoring games in near freezing weather so naturally I didn't have a good time. But a win, even an ugly or marginal one, is a win and I'm sure Croom is happy to have it.

There must be some state troopers who are Mississippi State fans too. I was on I-55 between 9 and 11:00 am and saw hundreds of state fans headed to the game speeding yet didn' see a single trooper. I don't have a problem with that as long as it's done for all schools including Jackson State fans headed to play TSU in Memphis. I was glad there weren't any troopers to be seen because i was speeding too at times.

MSU needs a star passing quarterback Have they ever had one? To be honest, I can't think of a single MSU QB who's ever did anything in professional football.

Having watched a lot of the sports shows and talking heads leading up to the game, during the game, and after - I have come to one conclusion... That it must be Croom - not God or Mother Nature - who makes the Sun rise everyday.

Have they ever had one? To be honest, I can't think of a single MSU QB who's ever did anything in professional football. No, they haven't, which has been a source of continued frustration for us Bulldog fans. The closest I think they've had was QB John Bond in the early 80s, way before my time in college. I still hear stories from older alumni about how good he was at the option and he set SEC records for QB rushing in his day, but I don't think he went pro (if he did it wasn't much of a NFL career). I was at State at the end of Sleepy Robinson's run at QB and we went thru a couple of promising QBs but struggled trying to create a consistently competitive passing offense. Defense was the key for most of our victories during my time up there. State just doesn't have the deep pockets for recruiting that other SEC schools with winning traditions like LSU, Florida or Tennessee benefit from.
