The Senate reconvenes on Dec. 4 in what’s commonly called a “lame duck” session. Usually a lame duck session means that with the election over, little is expected to be accomplished until the new Congress begins in January. But I’ll be working hard to make sure this short session is not lame, but very productive, especially when it comes to extending tax incentives for Mississippi’s hurricane-stricken counties.

This week I sought and won the position of Republican Whip in the United States Senate. I’ve told Mississippians for several months that I would seek a Senate leadership position if the opportunity arose and if it would be for the betterment of Mississippi and the benefit of the Senate and the American people we serve. My assumption of this leadership post meets both criteria, and I am delighted to be back in a position from which I can project my experience in ways that help our state and country.

Unlike some states, Mississippi is creating manufacturing jobs, and we’re doing it in the high-tech sector where a wide array of complex products are now made in Mississippi. The latest example is Raytheon’s plant in Forest. I was delighted to be there on October 11 for groundbreaking on a 90,000 square-foot expansion of its facility which will create 100 jobs. Once completed, it will produce the latest radar for our F/A-18 Navy fighter aircraft – units so good they’re designed to outlast the aircraft itself.

During World War II, when the Allies planned the invasion of Nazi occupied Europe, Winston Churchill actually proposed coming from the south, from the Mediterranean Sea and into the Balkans. That region was, as he called it, the “soft underbelly” of Europe, less guarded and ripe for a swift, piercing and fatal blow to Hitler’s regime.

Not long before the terrorist attacks of September 11, and well before Hurricane Katrina, some in the national media criticized me for helping fund the construction of a new helicopter carrier for the U.S. Marine Corps—one that would be built in Pascagoula by workers at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. I proudly helped christen that ship on August 19 because America needs this equipment now more than ever.

I’m among a growing number of Americans believing we must frankly acknowledge we’re in a war with Muslim extremism. To deny that Muslim extremism is a worldwide problem, denies the so-called “elephant in the room.” It invites division and defeat for the civilized world.

Just days ago, Mississippi’s capital became a focal point of the abortion issue as hundreds of anti-abortion protesters descended on Jackson to picket the city’s abortion clinic and other sites they contend support abortion. Many counter-demonstrators followed, and Mississippians saw first hand the kind of tense, passionate, placard board protests usually seen in Washington, D.C.

Despite the glorification of judges and lawyers on television, in movies and within popular culture, the mission of our courts is simply to enact the American people’s will in our laws. It may be called the “Supreme” Court, but the framers of our Constitution intended that the American people and their elected representatives have the supreme say.

On July 4 Mississippi is a sea of stars and stripes—red, white and blue. Our flag reminds us that the freedoms Americans enjoy were outlined when our founders signed a Constitution that began with three simple words: “We the people.” They were words scripted in big bold letters with those thick, broad ink quills our framers used so masterfully. But recent actions in Washington cast doubt on whether “we the people” really means much these days.

I have introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate to make future insurance policies easier for consumers to understand. The “Honesty is the Best Insurance Policy Act” calls for requiring insurance companies to state in plain English and big letters exactly what their policies do not cover.

Nov 30, 06 | 9:49 am [Lott] Getting Votes That Get Results for_the_people: i agree, E. I agree with Sen. Lott on so much, and I know that we are a forgiving country. Nov 19, 06 | 4:05 pm [Lott] Getting Votes That Get Results Tom Head: Am I the only one who finds it gloomily ironic that someone thrown out of Senate leadership for making a racially inflammatory remark has just been elected "minority whip"?
Cheers,

Oct 16, 06 | 11:48 pm [Lott] Made In Mississippi Tom Head: Since Trent Lott is our junior senator, his weekly press releases are newsworthy. Not that I'm a fan or anything... The only reason I'm not voting for Fleming is because I took the NARAL pro-choice pledge.
Cheers,

I'm a little bit confused about this blog. If it's written by Senator Lott, why are you the one submitting it? Do you know if he reads it? If he does, I would love to read a clarification of his policy on net neutrality. ...
